ugh kinda wish I hadn't read that last article

Spoiler:
the mission where you're Franklin and have to rescue Michael from the triads sounds sick, esp when he switches to Michael and he's dangling upside down from a meat hook while shooting

then again, if they're happy revealing that then there must be some seriously good missions they're keeping back. Also looks like they're finally letting us do the missions our way....

Spoiler:
when you have to repo the bike back, in prev games the rider would be invincible until you hit a cutscene, sounds like he could take him out whenever from the article

Yeah I haven't been reading any articles lately. I want as much as possible to be a surprise.

Meh they are only minor spoilers if that. IIRC one of them is in a trailer/video anyway.

Yeah I'm trying to avoid pretty much anything, even minor details. For example I heard about the engine clicking when you stop a car. Little things like that add up and I want as much as possible to be a surprise. I've been doing the same thing with a lot of games I'm looking forward to recently. I'd prefer to discover things like that myself rather then read about them and then look out for them.

At $265 million, GTA V cost more to make than every Hollywood blockbuster ever made - except one: Pirates of the Caribbean 3, which holds the top record at $300 million. Rockstar has already made the money back on pre-orders alone.

I would think that most of the budget of a movie goes to special effects and actors, but where does the money for a game go?
GTA V - Heists taking place up in hurrr Quote

really?

Yes, it's only staff and voice actors isn't it? I would expect that to cost far less than a movie.

Maybe most money goes to marketing?

It's been in production for five years. There were 300+ people working on it in the end. $265 million goes pretty quick.

I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to be a good programmer. Those guys at rockstar raked in the money.

Heh, a little part of me envies you

GTA is really the only series where I buy into and consume all the pre release hype.

Eh, I doubt they're paying their developers double market value.

Here in Seattle, the cream of the crop are pulling in high 100's/low 200's. Add in some bonus and stock and they can get into the 300's. But those are top dogs at Amazon, Google, and maybe MSFT.

Am I missing something? Does Rockstar pay crazy money?

Thanks for putting the engine bit in a spoiler!

Lol at thinking it's the programmers who get most of the budget in games like these.

Try sitting through the 20 minutes of credits rolling by at the end of one of these games and it should be obvious that the programmers are just a small part of it all.

So that kind of money (or even 80k to low 100's) over 5 years = good enough for me and just about anyone else in the states. I see how it looks like I thought "omg, rockstar programmers make millions of dollars." But I never thought that programmers got the majority of the money.

I do understand that there is so much more than just programming that goes into games like this. All I was saying is that's a pretty good annual salary. I'll take that all day long.

Well, the most significant cost by far for a video game is the staffing costs of the people making the game. Games these days aren't just made by programmers though, you're right about that.

Designers, writers, animators, audio guys/engineers, programmers, testers, voice artists, translators,... that's just all I can think of I'm sure there's more.

most of those are also just broad categories and require specialised roles within to make a game.

In general my perception is that being a top dog in any of the categories (except testers I guess, lol testers) will make you nice money, but designers/animators/programmers probably earn the most and certainly make big bucks.

Also, am I the only one who is shocked that we haven't seen any gameplay yet or not even the map? Stuff has leaked certainly, but nothing of the really cool stuff .

So sick I've just realised I have a day trip to alton towers on the 17th. Obv could be worse places to be but agreeing to go was definitely a leak.

Hoping I get the game a day early now.
