thoughts on best religion for Portugal? Say I'm currently really hated by the Papal state and they will have like lock control of curia so I'll be excommunicated for the very far future unless I send them a good 300+ gold I don't want to do that because my allies are Britain and Castille so I don't really mind being excommunicated as the only threat besides my allies is Burgandy. I can see changing to Protestant for the peace of mind though colonist chance Catholicism gives is really nice. I don't like reformed -10% tax but would that be overcome by say a very strong trade base?

Any religion can work really. Catholic is best for building up colonies because of the chance. You might want to wait until you have most of your colonizing done before switching.

Protestant is generally considered the best because it gives a double income boost, to tax and production. Both those factor into the tariffs your colonies make too.

Reformed is generally considered the weakest because it boosts trade, which is probably the most delicate form of income (can be ruined by infamy and embargoes). But if trade is making up a bigger part of your income than prod+taxes then obv it's increase will be better. You need to be a massive free trader or very small for this to be the case though.

In the first MP game where I was playing Portugal I switched to Reformed right away. This was a double mistake. I should've continued to colonize as Catholic until my area in South America was sealed off. Then should of switched to Protestant because my tax+production was bigger than my trade (and Protestant is what I wanted in the first place, I just had a big brain fart and thought protestant reformation=reformed.. :S ). It still worked OK since I was the #2 trader, but you should still see in the old stats that my Production+Tax > Trade.


Regarding taking over Egypt stuff, you could do this, but it will all be colonies without a land connection. Colonies make less money unless you crank all your modifiers to boost Tariffs. They also require 1 big or small ship per province to earn full income from (sealane protection modifier, or something), so having a lot of marginal colonies like that will require a bigger fleet to protect, which is hard to pull off as just Portugal. Also in multiplayer the Mamluke territories are generally seen as belonging to the Ottomans; it would take a lot of fighting vs them to keep them over time. I did have the north African muslim countries as vassals (Morocco, Algeria, etc) - and so does Portugal in the new game - but I didn't want to mess with the Ottomans/Mamlukes. They do have some really nice provs in the Levant though.

I played this for a bit, got mad into it, but found a few game breaking things that I can't quite recall which made me stop playing for a bit. Turns out the guy who made the mangus mod(or whatever it's called) is making his own version of this game, can't wait

feel as though My castille game is at the point where i can run over everyone, started a new game as Austria. wow, much different game, much harder. have to really make good judgements on when to go to war, etc. tons of alliances effect everything etc.
I feel like could play this game a few hours a day for the next year and not explore everything.

If you're the junior in the union then yeah, that might stop you from switching out of monarchy. If you're leading the union you can do whatever you want.

Do you have the required Govt 10? If yes then yeah, IDK. It defo used to be that you could switch out while leading PUs, but maybe they changed it (switching to Noble Republic helped you inherit since you could elect a new leader every 8 years for another chance, so maybe it was viewed as exploity).

Played a game as a small European power, had two provinces with no land access stuck in the mid Germany. Got declared war immediately. Minted a ton from the get go and bought lots of mercenaries so that I could annex him. Got a bunch of loans too.

After war I settled down, payed of my debts but had to mint a bit too much for my liking. Eventually got declared war on for not returning the province by the holy roman empire leader, blah. Had like 10 alliances so I ate him alive. For some reason I always lose like 3x the amount of men in battle as the enemy for some reason. And my army, ~6k, fled from a battle who had .8k, wtf? Annexed another state, vassaled another and took a ton of territory of some other guy, now I'm a 8 province country. Thing is, the new Holy Roman Empire douche is demanding me to release some of the provinces I took, of course I refused, but for some reason my bad boy points jumped from 9 to 16 and the whole of Europe declared war on me, cultist a-holes.

Only played for a few years, but my trade efficiency plumed down for some reason. I may have even been losing money by attempting to trade. And for some reason my expenses were ridiculously high, I wanted to go all peace like for like two decades, let my inflation/BB go down, but I was losing 100 denars a year for some down reason I figured out. Was attempting to trade which may have been -ev at that stage, and I was paying full upkeep for my army, but it wasn't over the limit. What gives? And how come I lose $ each month even though the income report says I should be making money? And why does it take soooo long for time to go by, I remember in a earlier Europa Universalis the max time button was sooo fast, now it's slow as hell

Bad boy has very negative effects on trade. You are probably losing a ton of money becuase you keep sending merchants around the world and they continue to fail because of your high bad boy.

So I stayed away from Ming for 100+ years. It's 1601, I've reached some kind of critical mass where I can wage war and win them. But I can't figure out how to get infamy under control.

Any ideas?

I don't have as much experience in the game as the rest of you but I've been doing a sort of decade peace and rebuild phase and then go on the aggressive and stop at around 12-15 bb and then do it over again. And I'm not saying I'd never fight in wars during my building and recovery phase I will but those are mostly for monetary gains or to keep a country under check I just won't annex or vassalize.

How often do you all scorch? I don't think I've ever used it. Use it in retreats of wars that will likely be white peaced?

If you're a small Vijay and haven't managed to expand fast enough to the mountainous region near Delhi and the big Timurid horde is coming, scorching the plains in the early game is the only way you can really survive. 100k men with super-cavalry vs your 40k odd men means anything that can whittle the enemy down helps.

I could imagine scorching say an outer perimeter province while you retreat and try to organize your guys or say an isolated pocket or province before you leave it to the enemy. I always thought about say in my Portugal game if Castille ever bullied me and I was boned I'd scorch my home land, retreat to the Maldives, and then come back after they were weak from attrition

so far I've never been forced to take such drastic measures, lol

one can scorch earth? is this in the expansions or something? or has to be unlocked? ugh this game is complicated

should be an option under any army on the bottom left box

I just saw on paradox forums, you have to own (not just control) the province to scorch it, so you can't do it on enemy territory.

EDIT: Going to try some Vicky 2 now, let's see if it's any good. EU3 SP gets very boring .
