It's not a preference for less AD's. There will be however many there are. If you had a theoretical base with no AD's, that would be an easier clear than if it had all 4, but you wouldn't use hounds in your army comp.
Similarly, if you find a base with all of the AD's on the outside edges, that's not always good for a lavaloon strategy. You'll get the AD's down quickly, and maybe you can save a hound or two, but now your remaining hound(s) will stick with a pack of loons, and you'll have a bunch of teslas/AT's/WT's/XB's in the middle of the base that will wreck a lot of loons before they lock on to a hound.
So the placement of AD's can add value to the use of a hound. Not to the point where I'd prefer more AD's, but enough to recognize that the placement within a base can help you decide whether to use a hound vs some other strategy.
