Damn, Zoast misses a world record by whiffing on the Metroid skip

Yeah he was flawless outside of that one skip. And Strae got it, haha. God that run is amazing. Love that race.

Zoast too good. Been following his channel for awhile, had no doubt he would win that race. Crazy that over $350k was donated towards Kill/Save the animals.

Chrono Trigger should be a sweet way to close out the marathon.

most of save/kill donations are just donations that would happen that don't really have anything they want to donate for. It's also a GDQ tradition so thats why that number is so massive.

What are some must see runs? I watched hardly any of this.

The Tetris segment was amazing.

Oh I saw Tetris.

Reading on the shmup forums that 2 top players wanted to do an Eschatos scoring race and it was knocked back during the first round of submissions but somehow an Ikaruga TAS gets accepted. Ikaruga isn't really a traditional shmup or a great spectator game and that TAS run was just boring. I really think a legit shmup "superplayer" showcase would go over well with the right game. Even if they couldn't get a JPN player there's enough western guys good enough to be entertaining.

shumps aren't even speed runs. You aren't going to see LoL or Dota2 in this event either even though they are the most popular. This isn't Games Done Expertly.

Tetris gets a pass because of how legendary/fundamental the game is to gaming history.

The VOD is still up where he plays the game. His run starts at about the 5 hour 30 minute mark, give or take a few minutes.

I forced myself to watch his entire playthrough. The dude was super awkward, painfully unfunny, and a textbook spaz.

The constant references to suicide were because his run was based on continuously killing himself in the game. It's not like he was playing something like Tetris and talking about hanging himself constantly for no gameplay reason. The references were arguably quasi-relevant to his run, even though they were unfunny to the point that crickets were seen leaving the auditorium.

That being said, I don't think I agree with Twitch banning his account.

shmup fanboys think shmups are far superior to everything else. shocked.

That's not what that post is saying at all. It's saying that the runs are more refined because speenrunning is still fairly young compared to dudes who have been playing garegga for 20 years. The Goldeneye example is a perfect comparison since the runs are so refined it's rare to see anyone beat the WRs instead of just tying them.

Shmup community is obv full of elitest fanboys but that isn't an example of it. Pretty clear a lot of the big runners don't care about GDQs any more.

That being said, a lot of wr holders appeared at sgdq. Ferret with bioshock. The Mario 64 runners, etc.

What uptrend? 2015 was the worst AGDQ I can remember watching.

I was speaking specifically of donations. There has to be a peak, right?
Awesome Games Done Quick 2024 Quote

Oh, theoretically no. Donations are going to be based a lot on the audience size and how people feel about the event, and I'm pretty sure twitch has grown a lot in the last year.

The donations are only going to go down if the event begins not grabbing the attention of viewers.

Donations will go up.

Quality of the marathon will go down. AGDQ 2012 - AGDQ 2014 were the best. Every one since then has been a marked decline.

I'm not there this year. It's just not worth dropping $3k to attend anymore (though nerds will tell you it only costs them $500 because they have no sense of bookkeeping.) Even though viewership has gone up, getting the exposure from your run just doesn't happen anymore. In 2013-14 you could put on an awesome run and get 5000-10000 followers on Twitch, walk into a partnership and start making decent money. The investment on attending was worth it. Take a look at the follower counts of some of the runners coming up. The event is so mainstream and washed out that people watch it for an hour, don't give a second's thought and move on.

Not to mention all the inconsistencies and questions surrounding both the Gamesdonequick LLC and its creator Mike Uyama, who has allegedly been "on medical leave" with mononucleosis for over 2 years now. No one has seen or heard from him, he doesn't respond to emails, all his tasks have been delegated to others. Many top runners have been "banned" from attending for non-reasons (Werster has been banned just because the organizers believe he poses a threat to uprise the community against the marathon, for example.) Someone also managed to register Gamesdonequick LLC earlier this year in Virginia, which puts into question whether or not the organizational company was ever actually registered in the first place. Yeah, we still have no clarification on that.

GDQ is approaching something very close to a scam. I'd suggest you think twice before donating. There's a lot more, but I'd have to dig it up.
