I bought my PS3 in December 07. Model CECHG01 (the 40gb). As of tonight, it won't read any discs. Nothing. One caveat: apparently dust on the lens can cause this and I haven't tried to clean it yet. Will do so as soon as I can get the right screwdrivers to open the thing up.

That said, it seems like a lot of people are having issues with the bluray players in this model number. Sony doesn't even offer this model anymore, which is additionally suspicious. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had problems with this model. Sony, of course, claims there's nothing wrong and that it'll be $150 for me to send in for a refurbished one. Considering that those only have a 90-day warranty, F that.

I don't know model number or anything, but a friend of mine had issues with a 60 gig ps3 a year or so back. IIRC though, it was under warranty, and I think they sent him an 80 gig as replacement. Other than that, I've never heard of anyone having ps3 issues. 360 RROD though.....different story

I've heard of people who have disc read errors, but usually a lens cleaning has fixed the issue right away.

don't do this. You are likely to break some warranty seals and then you'll be on your own. And I don't think that you should touch the lens with a tool to clean it. if anything at all, I'd try blowing air through it first (isn't there even canned air for stuff like this) and then use a cleaning disc. If it won't work, Sony shouldn't notice that you tried to fix it yourself. The best way would be to take it to your dealer and claim that it's under warranty, unless it clearly isn't. Or ship it in.

Edit: didn't see that you said it has a 90 day warranty. Are you sure about that? That sounds awfully short. I'd reread the warranty agreement that comes with the console.

Already tried the canned air. Warranty is 1 year, so I'm just under 6 months out of warranty. No real harm in breaking the warranty seal at this point. Took it to a friend's place Friday night to watch a movie. Brought it home and now it won't play anything. I'm hoping it's just dust.

This really doesn't mean ****, but I've had to clean my PS2 every 4 months for about 2 and a half years now. It's pretty easy to do and works like a charm after this. I'm hoping it's dust as well, and I'm sure you can find online how to clean them.

just be extremely careful. You will never be able to re-calibrate it. So try not to touch it with your fingers or anything hard like a stiff brush.

i think the same happened to my 40GB PS3 op. there was a mad house party at my student house when i was on holidays. my housemate told me there were people sniffing cocaine off my PS3. it wouldnt read disks after that.

i rang up the playstation helpline and they sent a courier to pick it up to get it fixed. they couldnt fix it so they sent me a new one for free. your 90 day warranty sucks

Cleaning the lens didn't help. It's recognizing that there is a disc in the drive, because the little bubble icon comes up in the top right corner of the screen. It just doesn't do anything past that. My current theory is that there are corrupted hard drive files, so I'm going to replace the hard drive and try that. If that fails, I may try replacing the BR laser assembly.

And just to be clear, the original warranty was a year. However, if you're out of that warranty and pay Sony for a refurbished unit, the warranty on the new unit is only 90 days.
