Is it time to Upgrade your setup? Is it time to Upgrade your setup?

Hi fellow 2+2ers,

I just recently upgraded my setup from a 24'' monitor to a 30'' monitor. What I learned going through the process, is that you need a special port on your computer to hook up 30'' monitors, its called a DVI Dual link, here is a picture:

http://www.datapro.net/products/dvi-...tal-cable.html

Most computers don't even have that port, my laptop certainly didn't. So imagine my surprise when my brand new 30'' came and I couldn't hook it up! I talked with the people at Best Buy and they told me that if you want a DVI Dual Link port, you almost have to go Desktop, which I find to be a BIG BIG waste of money- I like Laptops infinitely better.

There are no laptops on the over the counter retail market that have a DVI hook up, at least none that I found. I'm stubborn, I want a laptop that runs my 30'' at its max resolution 2600x1600... So I went searching for a company that does custom laptops.

I recently purchased a laptop through this company:

www.killernotebooks.com

I really had a Great experience using this company- their customer service was awesome, they Know laptops, and most importantly- they know how to get you what you need to do what you want to do!

I recently heard a rumor that someone on team Pokerstars just bought a laptop through this company...

Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience upgrading.

it does, but not having native windows is kind of annoying when you are poker player.

you can buy adapters for dvi to whatever the blue plug is for like 5$

A DVI dual link cable can't translate the signal to a VGA port (the blue one) even if it plugs in. You need a converter that costs hundreds of dollars. Instead I got a DVI/HDMI cable and it works, tho not at the highest resolution.

..my laptop has dual DVI (sager), for 30" setup but I just hook up two 20's to mine for 3 screens worth of space, never tried the 30" ... guess its better than two 20's since it's what all the cool kids get.

The signal for a 30" monitor from pokerstars is a DVI-D-Dual-link. The adapter you showed will let you plug your monitor into a VGA port on your computer. The problem is you need to translate the digital signal into an analog port so the VGA port can accept it. Even though you can plug it in the signal won't display unless you use an intermediary Digital/Analog converter which is like 300 dollars.

An HDMI port, however, is a digital signal, so if you use that you don't have to buy a converter. My graphics card isn't powerful enough to support the full resolution I'm told is my limiting reactant on why I can't get the 2500x1600 or whatever it is. I found the DVI/HDMI cable at a site called pacific cables and have no complaints so you can try them.

Where does one find rumors on where Team Pokerstars buys their laptops?

Really? I was quite impressed with the website and forums.

The company actually won the World's Fastest Notebook Competition a few months ago- you can read an article about it here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ndup,2023.html

TVTA, Irockhoes and Dubbious are right, we are only talking about if you want to have max resolution on your 30'' which is 2500x1600, otherwise just use the adapter you found- it will probably look pretty ****ty though I would think.

No image at all was displayed when I used that adapter.

Macbook Pro's are no different from a normal PC and install windows perfectly fine, either as dual-boot configuration or as a standalone windows install with no OSX at all.

The 17" MacbookPro costs a bit less and it weighs 6.6 pounds not 10, is 1" thin, has an 8 hour battery life and has and LED screen. I don't see why you'd buy the laptop you did unless you are a heavy gamer. Just a waste of size and space for a poker player, and with the dual HDDs and dual Graphics cards the battery would last 90 minutes tops.

IRH can you link the cable you are using?
02-03-2009 , 10:20 AM
I would have assumed that a single-link DVI port would run the monitor with a standard DVI cable at a lower resolution. I don't see the point in converting it to HDMI, as it's more-or-less the same spec + sound in a different package.
02-03-2009 , 11:31 AM
It does, if you have the dell 30', running it on non dual DVI will run it at 1920 x 1200 i think, not at the 2560 x 1600 it can run at.

You haven't said what graphics card or monitor you have.
