Bigger preflop, bigger on the flop. You could have shown BB that you flopped a set and he would have been right to see the turn with that bet.
Question re: preflop raises: I've seen a lot of people raising to 2.5BB preflop on this board lately, especially going into the blinds. Is there a change in thought on strategy that I'm unfamilar with? I was always taught 4BB + 1BB for every limper. You're either trying to build a pot, in position, with the best hand, and hoping to deny your opponents odds to draw out against you, or you are playing weak here and telegraphing that you have a hand you don't think will have SDV after five cards are out.
