What I'm most interested in, is why villain just assumes I'm barrelling with air on the river. He snapped me off on the river!

I've had a few run ins with this villain, and he plays a lot of hands aggressively so was happy to try and realise some equity against him.

Its slightly spolied by showing the result. I dont see a lot of worse hands that can call down. Villain should fold his 1 pair hands on the turn except maybe AsX but that also could/should be a fold. So he is weighted towards 2 pair, set, straight, flush for his river calling range.
Obv with this read the hand is probably fine but still on the close side I think.

I kind of understand the donk, this is perceived to be a better flop for us. But, is it? We both have all the sets and 2 pair combos, villain has more nut draws and more offsuit combos, a stronger range overall. Best play could be to check call the flop and be ready to play some awkward turns and rivers

You may be right here, however holding QJ means we block QQ and JJ. I think he raises flop with 99 and I don't see him squeezing with KT too much. I've just played a lot and seen a lot of zas to know roughly how he plays so was fairly happy to just to fire the 3rd barrell. The flush was an obvious scare but I'd rather just be the aggressor and go for it than checking the river and letting him fire it in.

This is just my approach in general tbh mate. It's something I need to reign in. In retrospect, I'd have taken this same line with AsKx also so maybe that's why he called.
