power of position power of position

One thing poker players (especially professionals) often talk about is the power of position; it does seem reasonable to assume (especially in NL poker) that the information that one gains from having position on another player would translate into that player making more money. But my primary question is this: How much EV does position actually add to one's starting hands? Being that I am a micro player online (were talking .01/.02 NL) I often find for example, myself on one of the blinds against one or two limpers who will have post flop position on me. One of the most common scenarios that I find myself in is being dealt AK or AQ on one of the blinds. Now I know from experience that more often than not one or more of these limpers has a pocket pair (giving them a slight edge over my AK per se. I also know from experience that three or four betting with hands like AK preflop gives the holder of AK almost zero fold equity at (0.01/0.02 NL). With these two things in mind I nearly always check hands like AK when i am one of the blinds. So in a nut-shell I am asking if the EV that hands like AK loose from being out of position is significant enough to not warrent a raise when there is nearly a zero percent chance that raising will pick me up the blinds at .01/.02. Any insight on this question and the subject of position at the lowest of micro limits would be greatly appreciated.

Position is the most important aspect of poker in my opinion.

My guess is that it will be your first "ah hah" lightbulb moment in your poker career and I don't really think it can be taught.

Of course you can hear about how important it is and how everyone always talks about it but I think that each player has to figure out it's true importance on his/her own (as with most things in poker). You can see the basic direction from where people's comments are coming from probably right now since they are strictly logical but you won't really "get it" until you figure it out for yourself. Hope that makes some sense.

more important than cards

Heres my insight: You don't want to just pick up the blinds at .01/.02 with AK, Raise preflop for value, you don't need any fold equity for it to be profitable. It is very likely that the micro villains will be holding things like KJ, KT ect. It is also likely that they won't be able to fold their low-middle pocket pair on the flop. By just checking in the blinds, you lose value. If you are getting like 2-3 callers consistently, try raising more.

When you have AK you are raising for value preflop. This mean you want a call. If no one is folding once they limp then just jack up your preflop raise to 6,7 or 8XBB or what ever peoplr are willing to call. Problem solved.

Welcome to the forums Silentwave. You question is far too generel to answer.

I suggest first of all starting with reading the stickies, both here and perhaps also in the small stakes forum (SSNL).

Then post hands where you are in doubt, the important thing in posting the hand is to provide reads on villian(s), reads give good answers, no reads just gives some basic mumbling.

But yes, positionis important .. if you look at peoples stats, most their profit comes from the CO and BTN.

Hope you like it here on the forums (this post I'm locking on the other hand due to it vagueness as said)
