$100 had already been proposed as the buy-in for the pool. If the buy-in had been $500, then there would at least be an argument that he was only liable for $100 since that was the proposed pool size when he stated unequivocally that he wanted "in", although his precise wording stated that he was in regardless of the buy-in. I think he really should still be liable for $500 in that scenario since he stated he was in and didn't bother to re-check the thread. It seems really clear though that he's responsible for a minimum of $100 no matter what. If yale doesn't have to pay, then no one should have to pay since most people used almost identical wording to join.

It's a completely relevant question, and I don't think it implies he was angle shooting at all. Usually in disputes, people are advocating for their own interests against other people who are advocating their interests so there's a natural inclination to be skeptical of unfavorable results and wonder if the other person is treating you fairly when anything surprisingly unfavorable comes up. On the other hand, surprising favorable results are greeted with the idea that they must be right or else the other person wouldn't have come up with them against their interests.

There's zero doubt in my mind that if the pool had gone yale's way, he would have said "oh wow, I didn't even know I was in the pool, that's awesome that I won!" when contacted without even a thought of giving the money back. He'd just have no reason to question the result. So the question is whether yale not believing he had immediately registered at the time despite using the same language to register as everyone else and wanting to be in a $100 Masters pool is enough reason to freeroll the thread for $90 worth of equity. I think the answer to that is a clear no.
