currently battling an absolute whale heads up. Only interrupted by a 30bb whale coming in and getting AJs in vs. the other whale's K6o preflop (k6o won)

Alan, are you a professional live player? I think I remember a while back you mentioning your days as a limit pro in the aughts. Are decent limit stakes still spread at casinos these days?

Interesting. I feel like on the smaller site I play on, 50 to 100 was a big jump. The regs at 50 are often pretty nitty and passive. They know what decent preflop play looks like and I they know to bet strong hands and draws, but don't often bluff later streets and can be pushed off mid-strength hands pretty easily. 100NL is where you start running into some tougher pros, and the player pools merge with 200nl a lot. There's still a fair amount of bad reg play and some tight players who play every table so while they're good, they are often tighter and distracted. 500NL is another decent jump where it's usually 4 or 5 good players all trying to devour a whale. Some of the 200NL players will show up when they smell chum in the water, but won't play against tougher lineups, and some end up getting beat back down to lower stakes (this may be me eventually, who knows).

I really miss chat tilt after playing so long on Ignition where there is no chat. My favorite was when I was being berated for sucking out on someone's monster after I had played my hand badly, and I would type "i knew u were bluffing" into the chat box. It always generated several more lines of chat tilt from my opponent. Too much fun!

when i played abroad people thought i was asian so the casual racism was pretty rampant and it was extra tilting to correct the spelling and grammar of their rants towards me because they were assuming i was english as a second language

I'm sad that it's going to be 2022 and there is still no tracking software that you can use on a Mac that will work on Ignition.

I had my first $1000+ session at NL locked up tonight, but I promised myself I wouldn't wuss out for such reasons and went ahead and played the final planned 30 minutes of my session. I only ended up $830 up lol. So now I am slightly tilted even though I had my best NL session ever by far. Oh well. The 1k+ sessions will come if I keep studying and grinding. Win locking is dumb and used to be a bad habit of mine in my LHE days, so I am glad I didn't given in to the temptation.

kind of funny that I had quite a lot of $1k sessions when I played live 1/3 all the time, but I don't think I've had one in years

I'm in the Bay Area. My home club, the Oaks in Emeryville, used to have a rocking good 30-60 LHE game, but it never came back after the lockdown. The 6-12 game , though, is firing on all cylinders Bay 101 apparently has an "occasional" 20-40 game, and an 80-160 that goes all the time.

It looks to me like the middle- to high-stakes games are trailing off, but the lowest stakes are thriving. What is missing are the levels that can feed into the bigger games: no 9-18, no 15-30, very little 20-40. NLHE, particularly the 2-5 level, has almost completely taken their place.

alan, how big is the adjustment from nlhe to lhe? what's a good win rate for competent but not crusher pro?

i've always been intrigued by limit but it seems like it'd take a lot more discipline as it'd be mostly cold calculation rather than theory - is this an accurate assumption?

Sort of. Preflop mistakes get amplified because more of the money goes in pre relative to nlhe. There's less room to be creative with your lines. You are pushing thin edges repeatedly.

Live LHE pros shoot for 1 BB (big bet not big blind)/hr. Crushers can make a little bit more, and most pros actually make less than 1 BB/hr. Something like .5-.8 BB/hr is good at 20/40+, but not sure about smaller stakes. You have to be careful who you talk to due to major survivorship bias in live poker. You will meet people who run at 1.5-2 BB/hr for 2-3 years, but they are most likely just on a heater since that is just 150-250k hands.

Tbh, most NL players struggle at LHE just like us LHE players struggle at NL. The most common leak I see from NL pros who play LHE is folding too much pre and folding way too much post. They also tend to be bad at squeezing out thin value since it is hard to get used to the idea of value betting A hi and bottom pair fairly often. LHE is a dying game, so investing time into it doesn't make much financial sense when you could be putting the time into your NL game. If you play LHE, play it for the love. An exception might be if you live in LA where the LHE games are still soft and plentiful at mid-high and probably will be for at least another decade.

100nl update: not only are we out of the negative, we're running pretty good

So far my impression is that the pool is still quite soft, but is soft in pretty different ways than 50nl. It seems people both are perfectly willing to get bluffed a fair amount, but also will bluff in strange ways themselves too, which I felt like I didn't see as much at 50nl (or maybe I've just become a better player idk). I had to update my strategy to call more bluffcatchers and be more willing to bluff more often, whereas at 50nl I was fairly nitty (by intent, I thought most people didn't bluff nearly enough)

can feel myself becoming a red line kinda guy before too long

Last 40k hands at 10nl and 25nl. If a nit like me can manage a positive RL, anyone can.

Nice graphs guys. I definitely have a sinking red line. I guess I’m not finding good enough spots to bluff, but at 50NL I just find people calling down too much. But that could just be me picking poor bluffing spots.
