only thing i dont like is that it is becoming the norm for an overmatched/away from home team to just park the bus and play anti-football. seems like the bigger the stakes the more negative one of the teams (if not both) are likely to play. IE inter vs barca in champs league, everyone vs spain in WC (even the netherlands for christs sake, who're probably the 3rd/4th most attractive side traditionally behind spain and brazil, and argentina.) just glad to see that true/beautiful soccer won out in the WC. would've been a shame if it didn't.

which is why i'm a barcelona/spain fan through & through. true players of the beautiful game.

wc is lame too with all the flopping and stalling to kill time. the rules are pretty bad.

forgot to mention the mental part of the game is probably what puts it over the top for me. not only do u have run like 10+ miles and do crazy agile/athletic moves everywhere, u have to see things before they happen and still then have the physical skill(s) to execute it.

Tennis takes more stamina than soccer imo
08-17-2010 , 10:38 PM
haha goon i said soccer b/c i didnt want it to be confused w/ american football.

you could only argue mid fielders, strikers and backs take less stamina

yeah the flopping is obv pretty ridic, but at the same time u cant really fault the players, b/c it has become so +ev to flop/dive/exaggerate fouls. sport is sport. and athletes/competitors will naturally look for any edge they can get.

its the same as when a bball player drives the lane and gets bumped slightly but will throw his arms up and act like he got hammered. or when a kicker in football(NFL) will get nudged ever so slightly and do a backflip and clutch his knee like he just got speared.

not arguing that the diving is outta hand, but dont hate the players, hate the system. (would say hate the game to quote the saying, but then u all will be like "yeah i will hate the game (of soccer))". one step ahead of u, punks.

you're right that its not the players fault, but it still makes the game suck to me. thats one reason i love the nfl. they do a much better job than any other sports league at constantly updating their rules to smack down lame exploits. kickers dont usually get that flag, btw. nba is another story tho.

wizard, stamina issue vs tennis aside, i think its safe to say u need a ****-ton of stamina to play soccer. and on top of that u need to be on the same "wavelength" w/ 10 other tired guys and see things before they happen and hope your teammate(s) do as well.

the combination of physical (stamina, skill, speed, strength, agility, etc) and mental attributes (vision, teamwork, thinking ahead, etc) is what makes it so damn difficult.

fwiw, as you can prolly tell from my avatar, i'm both a massive football and american football fan, but i used to feel the same about the NFL as you guys do about football.

there's literally only a few ways to get into a sport thats not in your national culture

a) have family that are already massive converts
b) move there and feel how entrenched the sport is in the locals
c) join a fantasy league

i binked c and had a sh*t load of fun getting to know the game/teams/players etc, and find the NFL to be ridiculously exciting to watch. the only grumble i have with it, aswell as the NBA which im a big fan, is the constant breakups. i think football flows more as a spectator sport, and therefore the excitement is more continuous and sustained

I am not questioning the skill needed in soccer, just the stamina compared to tennis.

no argument there (except the kicker thing, they seem to get the call everytime they fall down, w/ no consideration as to how hard they were contacted, etc. either way its a very small/infrequent part of the game.)

soccer def has a long way to go in terms of being proactive and adjusting the rules to improve the product on the pitch. they are so anti-technology that it drives me insane. i mean, even baseball started using it for christ's sake, and thats the most traditionalist/"this is how we're doing it b/c this is how we've always done it" sport there is. but at least soccer takes 2hrs per game, every game, no matter. baseball otoh, atrocious.

i dunno about that. obv its a big handicap, but if a game is good enough, it picks up followers. i like australian football league and think its pretty entertaining even tho i knew nothing about it for most of my life and only watch it casually if it happens to be on or something. on the other hand, i grew up with baseball, and i think it sucks.

yeah i mean obv. there's just some sports that naturally don't take your fancy, but i think too many people grow up with an idea of a sport being 'x,y and z' negatives because they haven't been exposed to it culturally without ever really giving it a chance. i know i was like this and im glad i stumbled upon the NFL otherwise im sure ida had all the negative english preconceptions about entrenched in me for life.
