The turn is a blank as far as we are concerned. Its very very likely that if we are beat now, its because we were beat before. The only reason to check behind the turn is to try to get value from the lower part of his range. It just so happened that a really nasty river card peeled, but if it didnt and he checked, then we could bet that and get more value. Of course for balance's sake we should be betting this turn sometimes as well, but in a vacuum I think checking behind the turn to extract value and pot control is better than betting the turn.
