Villain is 27/13 over 85 hands. He is of the passive sort. Can I donk the turn as I have done OOP ? How else can I defend my small/mid pocket pairs ?

You are setmining - you are not looking to bluffcatch or try to play back at him. Flatting a C-bet on that board without ANY equity vs. a passiv player OOP and then potting it on the turn is just terribad.

Lets say the dealt hands and the board are the same - now we are in position vs. a decent 25/18 reg with a pretty high C-betting frequency instead. Now we could choose to float because he bets that board with a very wide range and therefore we can often take the pot down on the turn (So few players double barrel with air unless turn comes K or A). However, this is something you only do against certain player types and definitely not against a passive player.

Am I really setmining here ? Am I really going to stack him in a BTN vs SB pot every time I hit a set ? By just playing 77 to setmine, I feel I am making a mathematical mistake here. And I am not sure I am without any equity here on the flop. But then again, I am not so sure about playing small/middle pairs in a BTN vs SB battle.

His range may be "wide" but bear in mind he is playing 27/_13_. I doubt he's opening 40% from the BTN or anything. If you're not calling with 77 OOP for setvalue, then why are you flatting it pre? You are basically drawing dead when you miss the flop, you're out of position and theres a million cards on the turn you don't wanna see.
