Villain over 153 hands: 22/16/34AFq w/ 3b of 10% (5/50). Pretty much best possible flop for us, not really putting villain on FD, pretty much thinking he has an overpair in this spot. But my quesion is assuming we are against an overpair, is shoving here the optimal play or is flatting the flop and then raising/shoving turn or even waiting til the river?

Interesting question. Suppose that you knew for sure that he had an overpair. You have
44 percent equity against JJ for example. With the money in the pot, the shove as you did is +EV.

You really don't have pot odds to call to hit your (2 pair+) 13 cards. Also the straight
draw cards put an obvious 4 to a straight on the board and you very likely won't get paid off. Waiting till turn to raise is bad since he still isn't going to fold the overpair unless possibly a higher broadway hits (and you won't know if it hits). The same arguments apply to waiting to the river.

I think what you did is almost certainly +EV over any reasonable range that villian has. For these other options it is not at all clear (at least to me).

The answer to a question about optimal play over a very restricted range is not always so obvious.

For example, if instead OP had said that it was certain that villian had AK, then is shoving AI probably isn't optimal is it?

Some may find these types of questions meaningless as we are always playing against a range......but I don't.

Great point. Hero should soulread villain for AK and call.
