Minraises at low limits - what do they mean? Minraises at low limits - what do they mean?

I recently deposited some cash in to my account after a two year break, and the competition seems about the same as I remember. However I've noticed a lot of people (mainly the fish) are minraising and I'm never quite sure what it means. From the notes I've taken it usually means top pair weak kicker, or mid 2p.

I would like to know what everyone elses thoughts are on playing against the minraise. What does it usually mean in your experience, and how do you respond? Are you willing to raise with air, or are you only willing to call down with a premium hand? Below is one of the many example from last night, thanks.

Poker Stars $0.05/$0.10 No Limit Hold'em - 8 players

Pre Flop: Hero is BTN with A Q
5 folds, Hero raises to $0.40, 1 fold, BB calls $0.30

Flop: ($0.85) K 4 8 (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $0.60, BB raises to $1.20

It's usually a way to try and build a bigger pot without scaring away customers. Either that, or it's a bluff from somebody playing scared money. Depends on the villain.

here's a very interesting study on the topic:

Minraise data analysis - micro stakes (ddagt)

cliffnotes: no fold equity, often a strong made hand or strong draw, take notes what villains show down.

It means that everyone on the planet now knows about cbetting. It depends on the villain and situation. Some will do this with monsters. Some will do this with air if they think you didn't really hit the flop. A lot of FDs will do this. Since only about 1/3 of the time does a flop hit a hand in any way, it is an effective way to slow down someone who has a high cbet %.

In your particular case, a c/r says at least TP, probably more. Your problem is you have nothing. Fold.

The more interesting case is when you have the betting lead going into the flop and someone mini-raises you when you are oop. Now you have to know your villain. If they rarely do it, they have a hand, possibly a really good one. If you start seeing them continually doing this, then it becomes a matter of level 3 thinking.

Just wanted to clarify that this was an easy fold. I wanted to post a better example but I was having trouble finding one. Thanks again!
