He's quite stronger than the average hand that calls him there and should be trying to get it all in almost every conceivable way with his hand strength, so if that qualifies as a cooler then I'm on board with the cooler crowd.

that's a fish definition of a cooler

I guess we have different views on this cooler thing. But if you consider that two pair for 25bbs a cooler, what do you call this?

Oomphala!

At first I saw that flush over flush and thought, what's this guy talking about and why did that dude put in so much with a low flush. Took a second look and realized that low flush was actually a straight flush. ****ing ouch.

yup me too, that is PAINFUL...this thread seems to be the nuts atm

always thought cooler was not as bad as bad beat. Like QQ<JJ AI pre. Bad beat being set of A's looses to running quads or whatnot. Somebody please explain. With crayons and graphs if needed. My poker mind is now in orbit.
05-28-2009 , 07:54 PM
Cooler is basically where your opponent is stacking off with your hand 100% of the time as well and it's 2nd best. Bad beat is where you were ahead when the money went in, but not by the river.

Coolers are always tricky because to get very technical, very good players should be able to get away from a few "cooler" situations. But yeah, I'd agree that coolers are essentially non-events since you can't really do anything about them.

cooler is like a set up, so say the flop is:

AAK

you have KK and your opponent has AK, that's a cooler, because regardless of who has which hand, the money is invariably going in and despite you getting it in with 0% equity, it's not like you played it bad, it's just a set up.

A bad beat is, like you said, something like QQ losing to 66 all in pre, where although you were a favourite to win the pot when the money went in the pot, you ended up losing the pot.
05-28-2009 , 08:03 PM
Bad beats are overrated. QQ < 66 will happen around once every five times. If you play a little volume, you shouldn't be bothered by stuff like this. Bad beat imo is somewhere around 5-6% equity or less, maybe 10% when I'm having a rough day.
