Note, this was posted in the wrong forum, apologies for that.

A player I know who is relatively new to poker (though he does know of 2+2 and tracking software) discussed the following hand of his with me:

BTN: 70.75 BB (VPIP: 76.92, PFR: 38.46, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 27)
SB: 31 BB (VPIP: 0.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 4)
Hero (BB): 100 BB
CO: 30.75 BB (VPIP: 25.00, PFR: 0.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 4)

SB posts SB 0.5 BB, Hero posts BB 1 BB

Pre Flop: (pot: 1.5 BB) Hero has A Q

fold, BTN calls 1 BB, SB calls 0.5 BB, Hero raises to 4 BB, BTN calls 3 BB, SB calls 3 BB

Flop: (12 BB, 3 players) 8 3 9
SB bets 2 BB, Hero calls 2 BB, fold

Turn: (16 BB, 2 players) Q
SB bets 2 BB, Hero calls 2 BB

River: (20 BB, 2 players) 5
SB bets 10 BB, Hero calls 10 BB

SB shows 5 8 (Two Pair, Eights and Fives) (Pre 38%, Flop 77%, Turn 11%)
Hero mucks A Q (One Pair, Queens) (Pre 62%, Flop 23%, Turn 89%)
SB wins 38 BB

Please breakdown his play on each street. On the flop for instance we had a healthy debate about his tendency to call with overcards. When asked what his plan for the hand was if a couple bricks happened on the turn and river I was told the following:

"I called the flop bet, and yeah I will cite pot odds for that. I was getting 7/1 and may well have still had the best hand. Even if not, I likely had 6 clean outs to the best hand, so with implied odds factored in as well, flop call was super standard. Folding to a 2bb donk would be horrendous. I'd have called a blank turn for the same reasons if the fish donked 2bb into the pot."

I proposed that calling with no real plan (other than being a calling station) was not ideal, and suggested reasons why raising could be a better approach to determining where one stood on the hand (and getting the button to fold), but I admit I have not played 2/4 cent poker (aside from chasing a milestone a while ago) in a long, long time.

The turn play I will leave alone for now, but I am also curious as to what people think of the river call facing that size bet from that type of weak player.

Thanks in advance for the feedback and best of luck at the tables.

You have to raise turn. As played, got to call river.
