Downswings! Downswings!

Hi All,

I'm in a pretty bad downswing at the minute, I've lost about 6 buyins in about 5000 hands.

Its mostly like AJ on a pretty dry board with an A, and losing medium sized pots to AQ. I've had an absolute tonne of hands like that, AA over KK etc. losing like 1/2 buyin on a draw where I'm getting the odds but not hitting.

I've been playing pretty tight (14/10), and sticking to it but I'm just not getting any breaks.

I'm getting pretty p***ed off now, and I'm just wondering is this pretty normal. How long have your downswings lasted? I'm worried that there is a fundamental flaw but I'm not seeing it, or is it just pure variance?

This hand below is absolutely typical. I think I've played it fine, but this is constantly happening and costing me a lot.

I lost 6 buy ins in 672 hands the other day and only made 1 mistake. It happens frequently and 6 over 5000 isn't even a blip really.

I'd check the turn against two villains in the example you show.

One thing I've learned in my years of playing poker. If you think you've seen it all, you haven't. Downswings happen to the best of them.

For that exact reason I don't like to play hands like AJ as the preflop caller, especially against early and mp raises. Can get you in a lot of trouble.

Do you play with tracking software? If so try to analyse your biggest losing hands and see if you couldve avoided them or lost less.

Also look at your winning hands and see if you couldve gotten more value.

If you put yourself in situations like in this hand, of course you lose. What is your reasoning for calling preflop?

I am having a rough time currently, just moved up to 5nl and I am getting annihilated by suck outs and running into da nutz, as well I really feel you with the draws never getting there and when they do I don't get paid...

I hope it gets better soon because at this rate I will be back down to 2nl far too soon...
And not looking forward to trying to earn back $50'at 2nl again

Just the 1 mistake and everything else was perfect?

OP - play 50k hands then you'll have a sample to analyse. Until then, just work on your game constantly. Unless you're getting utterly crushed on the tables, which it sounds like you're not, you just gotta plough through it.

Have you ever heard people talk about bank roles? Have you heard them say things like you need 50BIs or 100BIs to play a certain stake? This is why.

I mean 6BIs? It's absolutely nothing. My daily stop loss is 10BIs and I usually hit that at least a couple of times a month. You just have to deal with it.

Once you're down 30BIs you can really start complaining.

Well, January 8th and 9th were pretty ****ty. First day I lost 10BI in 2.7K hands, next day it looks like I lost 10BIs in about 1.5K hands... took a long break and then broke even for another 3.5K hands. Mix of 25 and 50... $700 total. *sad*

Thanks for advice all. Bankroll isn't a problem, it's only very low stakes. The issue I'm worried about is that I'm not playing good poker, and I'd rather pick that up sooner than later.

What do you think is a reasonable sample to properly go over and review my play? 50 k as above?

You'll be fine as long as you play your game solid, try nothing fancy, and don't tilt.
