If a player is 3-betting about 9-11%, is it possible to profitably defend against these 3-bets w/A6s?

It's just that if I'm opening 75%+ of my range, if I don't defend these hands, I am surely vulnerable to being 3-bet w/atc.

open 100% against someone 3betting that seldom. Depends what sizing he is using, if you can call, i guess. Doesn't matter if you are vulnerable to 3betting w any two. The reason you are vulnerable is because he is 3betting 9-11%. You are making an adjustment, and adjustments make you vulnerable. Just pay attention, and readjust if he changes his strat.

Thanks,

what if he's 3-betting something like 17%?

Then never ever fold. Axs is a strong hand. It could be fine to call against 9-11% too depending on 3bet size, or how his range is constructed. If his range is just the top % of hands, and his size is 4x your initial raise, probably a fold. But if his range is really polarized, or the sizing is smaller, it should become a call again
