betting the turn with top pair after being check-raised on the flop on drawy board 2/4 NL cash

When he checks to me on the turn I feel my hand is good and that he is on a draw and bet to charge for the draw.
Was my line OK? Ironically much of the time I am spooked by the check-raise and just check the turn for pot control and let opponents have the free card if they are on a draw.
