Hey,
I'm new to online poker but I have been playing a lot and doing a lot of study to improve my cash game and tournament play, to some success. My bankroll is ~$80, up from my original deposit of $25 on America's cardroom(Ny player). I'm looking form a sound bankroll strategy to facilitate moving up in stakes from .01-.02 onwards. I have a few real life obligations such as train fare to school five days a week. Without a current "real" job on the side. I'd like any advice available as far as what percent of my winnings can I feel comfortable withdrawing while still growing my bankroll at a reasonable pace. I win around $2-5 a day in penny cash games and regularly place in tournaments of ~100 players with several first place finishes in the last few weeks for around $6- $14. To rephrase my question, with say a possible win of $164, with my tournament buyin of $3 how much should I apply towards bankroll growth what % could be considered for myself.

-Sincerely, Owl Lin

What are your monthly expenses?

Income less expenses will give u your net profit for each month. Split this according to how aggressively u want to grow your poker bankroll vs cash withdrawals to spend on yourself

At the lowest levels of poker I would look to grow my roll as fast as poss so would use 90-100% as growth

I wouldn't withdraw anything until you have a bigger roll or earn more or both. You're really in the "cheap learning/donking around to find out what you like" phase at the moment. You also don't know what you can expect to win in a month - you think you do but you don't - so I'm going to suggest you set some kind of target like $500 or playing for 3 months or whatever, before withdrawing anything.

Keep at least 100 buy ins (200 is better) for tourneys and don't play in tourneys that you have less than 100 buy-ins for.

Cash, choose the level that you want to grind and save up 50 buy-ins for it. Once you get to a level that you're comfortable with and consistently beating you can cash out everything over 50 buy-ins.

I think keeping 50 buy ins for the level you are at and then taking a shot at the next level when you are "up" 10 buy-ins for that level is a good strategy.

So for NL2 you want to keep a minimum $100 in your roll. When you have $150 you can take that extra $50 and take a shot at NL5. If you lose the $50 drop back down to NL2 and grind it up again. If you win at NL5 bring it upto $350, and take a 10 buy-in shot at NL10 and so on and so forth.

That brm is extremely nitty, esp considering how he can`t do anything with 2nl/5nl winnings in NY. grind up that roll using an aggressive BRM and focus more on only 1 game at a time.

Do not withdraw a penny unless you absolutely need to. Grinding micro limits 5NL/10NL is going to be a biiiitch if you have to withdraw small amounts every so often.

Personally I do 50 BI's before I move up online. I'm a BR nit now, mostly because pasting a paper on my wall with extremely strict BR management prevents me from going against it so easily as I used to.

Once I get to a certain BI , I'll sometimes start aggressively doing a ladder ascension up limits.

For instance, get to $200 for 10NL (20 BI's) then I'll take shots at 25NL and if I win 2 to 4 BI's , I'll buy in at 50NL. If I win a few more BI's, I'll Buy in at 100NL.

But if I hit $200 again, I'll immediately go back to 10NL. Then I'll grind 10NL until I hit $250. Then I'll start an aggressive ascension all over again. I can't advise this strategy for everyone unless you are already familiar with the play at those limits.

If you are not, stick with at least 20BI's per limit. If you've never gone on a 20 BI downswing from variance, you will eventually. BR management is key to winning longterm and keeping your sanity during downswings.
