I wouldn't suspect villain to bet much on the river even with a missed straight draw. I would b/c, pretty unlikely he has a flush so as long as it isn't a huge overbet I would call it off like you did.

Villain would raise the turn with straight because the board is draw heavy.
With Ax villain would not check the flop. I would also bet the turn but after his call and the river I would give up!
I think this is a flush!
