I think you played it fine, i think on the river you open the door for him bet a decent amount of hands containing AIR, any 7, 88+, maybe an Ax. Or missed diamond draw.
Since you beat a decent amount of this range, calling is fine.

IMO if you check the flop, you are done with the hand. When you check the flop, you are giving anyone with mid- to high-PP the idea that his hand is best. Either x/f or bet flop with intention of f to r.

I probably would not have checked the flop, but that's just me. I think a cbet is fine, and if he raises then it's a fold. As played, I think it's fine.

x flop is good, when villain checks back my line is usually bet turn, bet river small
