So, I've now finished my uni application basically. After three drafts of my Personal Statement, I finished it, and handed all the crap in. Apparently I was first at college, before all the Oxbridge guys too. Dunno if this is good or bad.
I applied to LSE, UCL, Bristol, Durham, Nottingham.
When do we find out if we got an offer? How far on are you guys?
09-16-2008 , 10:32 PM
You won't find out until April or something I think.

UCL replied rly fast to me(like november) and I had applied to everything just b4 oxbridge deadline. UCL didnt accept me tough so that could be reasoning for the fast reply lol.

LSE didnt accept me either and replied in february

I take the ib (so this probably isnt much help but whatever) and had 42 predicted(most you can get), applied to:

oxford - rejected
ucl - rejected
lse - rejected
warwick - accepted
birmingham - accepted

pure econ at all of em

how come you chose birmingham instead of say, bristol or durham?

do you think it's easier to get into warwick than ucl?

I chose birmingham totally at random tbh just as safety, I didnt do any research on safeties and just said **** it and picked birmingham since I was fed up with the whole application process(lol oxford).

Hard to say if ucl is easier to get into than warwick, I think its just a matter of luckboxing with econ since I was way above requirements at ucl for econ and still got rejected, warwick is still probably easier to get into, all of my friends who applied there got accepted(but thats also different courses and stuff)

From my knowledge of people's experiences with applying for econ, the selection process seems completely random. 2 of my friends from school both applied for econ at a host of uni's and had a very similar personal statement and very similar interests. They got accepted to all they applied for (predicted 4 A's), except for one got into UCL and the other didnt. Yet they got accepted to LSE, warwick, durham :S

My brother will be applying for econ this year at a bunch of uni's, he has decided against oxbridge (altho he was put forward for application by his school) and will look to apply to the other top uni's in the country.

TBH for his sake/sexuality im glad he decided against oxbridge!

to get into oxbridge is a crapshoot anyway, guy last year, 5 A's, no interview at oxford wtf?!
09-17-2008 , 06:06 PM
They get 800 applicants for a course with 50 places, all of which get 4 A's + at A level. What else can they do?

Set harder entry requirements IMO.

GCSE A* in Zambian Cultural Studies anyone?

let's see what happens for me then, now it's just gonna be waiting waiting waiting.
The problem they have with econ is that suddenly a million students all want to do econ, and all of them have 3 A's+ and shiz, so it's hard to find the right candidates, and I'm sure one or two potential next john keynes's were lost by them not getting into a good university..
I think I should've chosen Warwick by the way now. Great work you guys...

5 As doesn't look as good as you think. The university admissions tutors will realise that most A-Level work requires very little creativity and the fact that instead of probably doing something more relevant to the course they want to do they've done a few more pointless A-levels.

Also they are very good a realising if you've filled your CV with a lot of filler rubbish.

Best tip is to get your name out there by e-mailing the admissions tutor and asking about what kind of candidate they are looking for and information about the course. My tutor is in charge of the university admissions for my course and she asked me to chat on msn to a few people who wanted to be put in touch with people on the course. Also if a teacher looks through your personal statement give it to an adult professional when you are done because the teacher ones tend to be generic and a bit ****. Ask you dad's friends or this board to have a look.

Not sure if anyone's mention Loughborough yet but I'm just about to start my second year there and its definitely worth a look, you'll find its different to alot of uni's you've mentioned and you might like it alot.
Not sure what course you're after but it's alot more than a top class sports uni and people are slowly realising it!
