Yeah, I have recently started phasing out my cargo shorts. I'll bust them back out soon for work stuff, but that's only to keep my hands free. edit: lol that sounded dirty. I'm teaching drums. Need both hands free.

I'm not really a big fan of the plaid ones either b/c I feel too frat-tastic in them. I'd much rather have a solid pair of shorts. Billabong, AE, rarely Hollister but sometimes, Aeropostale, all dece imo. I'm not bro-y at all fwiw.

Also, I <3 graphic tees, but only to class, when I'm just bumming around, or when I'm teaching. I do have a weird sort of respect for the dude that has the "5$ footlong" shirt on at a party though, even though fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck no I wouldn't do the same.

Also common rookie mistake I see with friends from home...stop wearing jeans, nice shorts, nice pants without a ****ing belt
If you wear those shoes, you're making a much bigger mistake than not wearing a belt.

I can only assume this is an east coast thing. If I saw those around most parts of the US, I'd think "immature undergrad" or "burnout" or "wannabe black dude."

I have them in a much less flamboyant colors (blue/grey/green) but at the school I go to which is like 99.87629 white kids besides the basketball team, the kids that would be considered 'cooler' wear air maxes like this. I assume because they look more like a athletic/caucasian shoe than a pair of air force ones/jordans that you'd see in a rap video

what do you think?

Like I can't wear aviators because my head doesn't fit them if that makes any sense

I mean obviously I'd love to go out and rock suede louis vuitton moccasins but just going out during the day maxes are the go to shoe. I mostly wear sperrys anyway.

it doesn't have anything to do with this. there are sneakers you can buy (probably for less than the nikes you posted) that don't give off such an amateur vibe.

sperry's aren't bad. if i were you, i'd stick to those when around women. but again, i think that the shoes you posted might just be in fashion in your area, whereas they're certainly not in the parts i frequent.
07-07-2011 , 01:11 PM
GCG what other sneakers are you talking about specifically? I only see Nikes like that and skate shoes being popular.

Sperry's became to hipster for me. Same thing happened with PBR.
07-07-2011 , 01:13 PM
I'll still never understand how PBR became the hipster drink of choice??? then again I've never met one.

Also haven't been out like to parties and bars much this summer since I'm lazy(inb4 weed jokes)

But I was wondering what are good summer going out clothes? Like at night kinda thing. Usually when it was cold the standard was jeans and a long sleeve maybe a fitted zip up hoodie and nice shoes. But I'm kinda lost on good summer choices?
07-07-2011 , 02:15 PM
I wear basketball/athletic shorts 5 days a week, cargo shorts twice a week (roughly obv, I don't follow a schedule) in the summer. Cargo shorts are pretty standard here. Anytime I need to go somewhere nice I'll throw on cargo shorts, a polo, and jordans (gotta keep em guessing). Sperrys definitely = hipster shoes at this point.

GCG, nothing wrong with those shoes and I'm a couple thousand miles from the east coast.

lol you guys must be confusing hipsters with frat boys from the south if you think sperrys are worn by hipsters?
07-07-2011 , 03:44 PM
I wore them everyday to school the last four years and I'm neither. It's not exclusive, just in general. One of my friends, who has been planning on going to Kentucky and joining a frat since before high school, wears them all the time outside of school. So that's definitely a niche. But I would think 50+% of people wearing sperrys now that aren't old people are hipsters.

Sperrys are still for fratstars in my opinion. I'm not giving up on them as long as there's still a quarantine for hipsters in brooklyn and lower manhattan.

Toms/Converse are for hipsters. Hipsters definitely don't wear Sperry's.

Toms as well. Converse are more punk/emo here. Sperrys definitely still hipster though. I have 4 super hipster friends who all wear sperrys liberally.

Its all about your roommates

sperry's are lol looking but apparently pretty comfortable, so i can't hate too hard.

And yeah, they're def for fratastic douches here, not hipsters.

5 years ago you'd be right. Have you seen hipsters lately? Chucks or sperrys 90% of the time. Keep in mind they have built a reputation off of taking things that were once OK and overdoing it to the point so that it is 'ironic.' This has recently become most evident with basketball jerseys.
Not that Fratstars don't still wear them obv, but I see so many skinnyjeans+sperry combos its ridiculous.

You don't see the irony in a bunch of trust fund Columbia kids (who don't want the world to know that's what they are) drinking a beer that was like the drink of choice for blue collar steel mill workers 50 years ago!? Haha in reality I would guess it's probably just because it is so cheap + high alc content relative to other cheap beers.
