sneaking into classes sneaking into classes

anyone have experiences with this?

im in boston now, looking to sit in on interesting things around town

A lot of classes here are big enough that you can go to other lectures no problem. In a non-lecture type class that probably would not be kosher.

lol people do this?

Sneaking into pretty much any 100-level course would be fine - I think upper year courses may me a problem. Too bad your not in toronto i could just get you to go to my classes and take notes for me.

right now i'm showing up to a Popular Music of the 60's and 70's class because i already have 18 units and at my school if you go over that you need to pay extra tuition, no one has noticed so far. if the class has <50 people you are probably fine

lol you are usually gonna be fine even if its upper level classes... most of my 4000 level classes have 50+ people in lecture and no attendance is taken, even if attendance is taken its no big deal cuz u just wont have to say anything..

ull just miss out on the labs i guess

i think it depends where you go. here 400 level classes in my major are going to be between 10-20 people most likely. some professors just lecture and would never know if an extra student was there but some would definitely notice

Just ask the lecturer beforehand if its a small lecture if you can sit in on the lecture because you're interested in the subject.

This.

If it's a big lecture, just sit down.

Speaking as a college teacher, I would not even notice if you sat in on a class with 30+ students.

30 students is about the breaking point (at least for me) between asking the professor for permission and just sitting down. 50+ I'd def just sit, but 20-30 I'd probably ask.

i think the idea of going to classes you are registered for blows yeota's mind, much less classes you aren't registered for

i think fun classes i would just go to because i wouldnt have to do the work. awesome

Going to classes you have an interest in : OK if it's a large hall and you maybe ask the prof. Also, don't show up after week 5 or ask questions ever. If there is group work in any way shape or form, please to also be leaving never to come back if you have no permission to be sneaking in.

Going to classes because you are the gunniest of gunners and want to take a headstart on next semester's material: never OK.

Not sure how all universities work but it seems like you'd be fine going to any class that is defined as a lecture, which is basically any class where the students aren't expected to contribute at all in the form of discussion (though some voluntary discussion occurs).

funny story, i once had a class w/ 5 people in it and we all didn't show up one day. the prof. went ape****.

The only time I snuck into another class when a hot friend asked me to come. It was a 200+ psychology lecture on something I can't really remember. Wasn't that fun. Wouldn't do it again. Got my own back when I made her turn up to a lecture on eigenvectors. Ha.

one of my teachers once told a story where she was in some physics course with just two other students, one day she walked in about half an hour late and saw the professor lecturing and writing on the board despite the other two students being absent.

I had the same thing once with a 4-5 person particle physics class at 9am, I rolled in about 15-20 minutes late and was the first one there. I was a little confused to see her just sitting there, so I asked what was going on and she just glared at me and started lecturing.
