If he confesses, the punishment is often more lenient then defending your case and losing. Any way I know a girl who was charged with shoplifting and all she got was some community service, no prison ldo.
edit: she had a lawyer.
the point of hiring a lawyer isn't to plead not guilty, obviously he's guilty of something. you need a lawyer because they can change what you're pleading guilty to and what the consequences of that will be. felonies can become misdemeanors, jail time can become community service, records can be sealed or charges dropped for good behavior, etc.

Lots of mixed responses in this thread regarding whether to hire a lawyer or not. We haven't decided whether to hire one yet or not, but there is no downside to getting free consultations so we will be talking to several lawyers in the next weeks.

My brother's court hearing is on Oct. 27th or so and his diversion officer told him that there is a strong chance he will get probation, in which case it will last 6 months.

Not sure what else to do right now other than speak to some lawyers.

anybody else have any advice?

lol, that kid has some large stones. Is he roided up too? (protein bar) I would try to go to store and offer to pay 10 times amount of said goods and apologize if whatever charges could be droped.

This is one of the most pathetic threads ive ever read on 2+2 and wish I had not because of all the god damn stupidly from some of these replies.

A. OP, it's not the end of the word. Probation is not the end of everything, if he gets it for 6 months make sure he doesn't do anything wrong again.

My best friend went to jail for a year, got 750 hours of community service, and 7 Years of probation. All b/c he beat up a kid who was older than him, his dumbass younger brother tryed to step in and happened to get his jaw broken from 1 punch(he was punched by another kid other than my bestfriend).

My point is my best friend is almost completely out of all his punishments. The 7 years probation got reduced to like 2 just because he was a great kid, acknowledged he made a huge life changing mistake, and did not **** up ever again.

Marijuana should never be a crime, so that's not really a problem of yours. If he wants to smoke marijuana, that's his choice - as long as he doesn't hurt anyone or have the ability to interfere.
Great advice, try as hard as you can to deal with this out of court it saves everybody stress, time, and money.
