Important distinction. And anyone who isn't a hockey fan will probably have a misguided opinion on the matter, so who cares what they think.

That's certainly an interesting bit of framing.

I don't see anything wrong with trying to get someone to take a sucker's bet as long as all information is as available to them as it is to you. I don't object to you offering one either; I'm just not going to assent.

The bashing was of course based on you thinking you retained trash talk privileges when you wouldn't so much as take points on a bet (under terms that wouldn't cause you to lose any more often than you would if you took Vegas's terms). Thing is, even if someone has full trash talk privileges, they should be restricted to before a game and possibly during when the game is still in question. Obviously the inability to take a win as reward enough, and the feeling of a need to rub in the loss on an opposing fan in the direct wake of the game is low class regardless of all other circumstances.

As I said, when the Canucks close this thing out, whether it be tonight or in game seven, you won't hear a word of trash talk or taunting out of me. That type of behavior is beneath me, and that statement quite honestly isn't a display of arrogance because it should be beneath absolutely everyone.

This is kind of an odd argument. Unless you're shutting yourself indoors for the duration of the playoffs, you still have to go mingling amongst a society that has tons of non-hockey fans. Of course anyone should care what they think.

But I guess this goes back to the same mindset that opposes you to untagging Facebook pictures.

Shrug. I'm not doing it for them. And scaring young children can be fun!

A person can say this about any ridiculous thing they do when others disapprove of it.

I'm not going so far as to say that the playoff beard thing is outright ridiculous, but the notion remains the same.

Do you at least keep your neck shaved?

I have a funny vignette in my head of goofyballer explaining to some SF hipster chick that he has a playoff beard and her suddenly becoming less interested when she realizes that it isn't his 4-square team he's referring to. Both awkwardly turn away from each other as he finishes his explanation that there actually is a professional hockey league in the US.
04-24-2011 , 04:50 PM
Why do they love 4-square so much? I could never figure that out.
04-24-2011 , 04:52 PM
Hipsters are basically just people who are stuck in the weird sort of nostalgia for childhood that occurs in adolescence and generally coincides with the discovery (worship?) of irony.

Plus 4-square is a pretty ****ing sweet game.
04-24-2011 , 04:53 PM
I've never even heard of 4-square, I had to go look it up. I thought that hippies just threw frisbees around. I figured they didn't approve of any game where you would actually keep score.
04-24-2011 , 04:53 PM
Hipster != Hippie
04-24-2011 , 04:55 PM
4square is the ****

Um theres a huge difference
04-24-2011 , 05:04 PM
I believe you, but I certainly don't know any more now than I did before your post.

I mean what's the difference between the drama club and the lax team? They don't really overlap at all except they're both poor and implicitly reject Red America. in fact they're incredibly different.

To start:

Hipsters are an urban creature, whereas hippies are not.
Hipsters are generally very conscious of culture (underground music, street art, etc) , liberal intellectual trends, and are verrrrrry fashion conscious/fashion forward within their own world. Hippies focus more personal art rather than "culture", they focus more on ancient philosophy and introspection, and don't really give a **** about how they look.
Hipsters are intensely cynical and love irony, hippies reject cynicism and love everything.

I could go on and on, but the last distinction is the most important.

Ah, okay. That clears it up.

Both types sound dreadful, so I'll just go back to lumping them all in together.

I am about the farthest thing from a hipster because I dress very preppy and tend to be very enthusiastic about life, people, and things I like... but I think smart hipsters have great taste and are good people to hang out with. Their bars also are some of my favorite places to hang out.

Hipster chicks can be great too!

I cannot hold conversations with drug-addled hippies.
04-24-2011 , 05:34 PM
LKJ is there a group of people you don't despise?
04-24-2011 , 05:36 PM
Yes.
04-24-2011 , 05:57 PM
good tune GcG

and gg wisconsin for having a NHL hockey team
04-24-2011 , 05:59 PM
At least you sort of have an NBA team.
04-24-2011 , 06:12 PM
barely
04-24-2011 , 08:23 PM
i guess i just don't view "not shaving for a little while" that dramatic a change from my usual routine.

I'm shocked that you don't know what a hipster is. They are pretty frequently discussed on 2+2 and pretty sure quite a few times in this thread.
