The Colossus numbers look to be wayyyyyyy down. Didn't they pull in 18k entries last year?
I think even the average recs are starting to realize the chance of binking a WSOP bracelet is so tiny that they're better off playing in a $600/$500k or $600/$1m event elsewhere that gives you 4x the starting chips with 40 minute levels in a nice venue.
Times have changed. The WSOP still has plenty of good value here and there, but overall people have realized they can stretch their dollars far further elsewhere.
If there was a Like button I'd surely be using it for this post. This year and last, the first thing I thought when I looked at all of the summer series was that the WSOP seemed to be lacking. Aria, Venetian, Wynn's poker rooms are far more enjoyable to spend hours upon hours in. I've found the softest 2/5NL at the Rio during the series though, at some point I'll make my way there.
