Cheat or honest mistake? Cheat or honest mistake?

Friendly game, very low stakes, two table tournament. Or at least I thought it was a friendly game. However...

Guy to my left shoves on river, called by guy sat opposite me. Showdown... The guy opposite reluctantly shows King high (Ahem!), villain to my left announces he has a straight and very quickly flashes 68o, then mucks both his hand AND the flop (collects cards and turns them facedown ready for next person to deal).

Well, I notice that his 68 bricked the board and is no more than 8 high. So I demand he turns the flop cards back over (I did this very quickly before he had a chance to spoil the pattern).

"Oh, I didn't make a straight" he says: "King high is good". He was eliminated.

Jokes right? No one else on the table even noticed.

Now, the thing is. All night long (at least 4/5 times) at showdown he was jokingly saying "straight" after his hand bricked. Causing other players to double check the board and see that his hand bricked...

Also, what is the first thing you do after winning a big pot live? Collect the chips, right? Who cares about tidying up the cards for the next person to deal, that's their job, right?

Villian is well versed at poker, I've seen him about a few times.

What do you think? Guilty or honest mistake? I know what I think...

Sounds like angle-shooting. Should have been warned after second time and then penalized if he continued to misrepresent his hand verbally. But if no one ever said anything, its not incumbent on the dealer to do so.

I agree it is angle shooting, but I do believe it is the dealer's job to enforce the rules and notify the floor.

This sounds like a house game, not in a casino or place with professional dealers.

The guy is definitely cheating IMO and knew it. Sounds like you believe the same. Perhaps someone else at the table should have said something to him about miscalling his hand the first or second time it happened

Yes, it was indeed a pub game where the players deal the button (He was on the button btw) and yes, personally, I have no doubt he was guilty.

I wanted to say something about it earlier, but the people that play respond with lines like: "We're not playing in Vegas, you know?". And until the later incident, he never tried to actually cheat the pot.

So glad I caught him though. Now he should know not to 'eff about when I'm around and hopefully all of the other players will have their wits about them more often.

Honestly, you need eyes like a hawk! And for a £4 game - ffs!!!
