I don't know what you mean by "shady," but the rake is pretty similar to other rooms and tournament series.
During their special tournament series, for a $300 contribution to the prize pool, Caesars charges a $50 rake, which includes a mandatory $10 staff add-on. Venetian charges a $40 rake and offers an optional $10 staff add-on, although I would imagine virtually all players take it rather than start out with less chips than the other players. Of the $300 that goes to the prize pool, Caesars withholds 3% for the staff, Venetian withholds 3.5%. Venetian tournaments are two-day events and most Caesars play out in one day, so the structures are slightly different, but the rake is pretty much the same.
In terms of smaller buy-ins, the Caesars lowest buy-in is $100+$30, which again includes the mandatory $10 staff add-on. Aria runs a daily tournament at 1pm and 7pm that has been growing in popularity and has a $100+$25 buy-in. In both cases the prize pool has 3% withheld. In this case, the Caesars rake is $5 more, but the structure will usually last at least 12-14 hours, as opposed to the Aria's 9-10 hour structure.
If anything is "shady," it's that some of the rooms make no reference to the rake in their advertising, and just publish the total buy-ins.
