Sorry if this has already been asked, but some of the WSOP events are advertising that they will start paying out on the first day. With an event that has multiple starting flights and days, how is this possible? Is it just a percentage of entrants per flight that get paid?

tia,
WSOP noob

It won't be multiple starting flight events. It will be on many of the other events that have just one Day 1.

I thought the $888 Crazy Eights event (#54) advertised Day 1 payouts?

Are you sure it won't be multiple starting flights? I've been in tournaments where this is done.

What they do is say that X% of the flight make the money and that when they get to Y% of players the flight ends. Y is less than X. Players finishing between X and Y, get paid Day 1 and are done, the rest move on to the second day and are in the money and get paid when the tournament continues.

For example 12% make the money and 10% continue on.

Flight 1, 200 runners, 4 get paid that day (#24-#21) and 20 move on to day 2.
Flight 2, 280 runners, 6 get paid (#34 - #29) and 28 move on to day 2.

On day 2 all 48 players are in the money and will get paid in the position they finish.

Thanks, makes sense. So in your scenario would the 10 players who cash on day 1 receive the same payout?

Not necessarily, but it would certainly have to be done by percentages. In practice though, in the few tournaments I have seen this done, those who cashed and finished on Day 1 did receive the same amounts.

This is done regularly in large guarantee/low buyin tournaments in LA, where the entry days can span a week or more, and the prize pool is juiced by allowing players to enter multiple flights with best stack forward. They post the number of players moving forward and often have two levels of payouts for players knocked out before the end of the day. For instance, in LAPC Event # ($240)5, 12% got paid; if there were between 130 and 137 entries into a flight, 7 passed through to Day 2, 8th-11th got $550, and 12th-15th got $375. In this particular event, if you qualified for Day 2 more than once, you got the minimum payout for Day 2 for stacks that were removed.

It's not unheard of for WSOP $1K events to bust the bubble on Day 1, although the increase in the number of chips did make things go longer. I did a chart last year for PokerNews on when the bubble broke, comparing 2014 and 2015.

Yes, it is possible to cash multiple times in events that allow multiple entries. Here's how it happens - you hit the money in Flight A of colossus, then bust before bag and tag. You enter Flight B, mincash again.

You may also be able to surrender your chips if you are super short at the end of a day 1 but haven't heard any specifics about that.

This should be possible this year in some of the smaller buyin events because they are paying a higher percentage of the field and because of the early level they removed.
