Yes, there is a poker room rate for the remodeled Commerce Crown Plaza hotel. Please call 323-728-3600, ask for the hotel, and book your dates. The rate has to be adjusted on site based on your play with tournament coordinator Jeffrey King or a casino shift manager.

It's the reason I wrote the article I did about reentry and still stand by my opinion that they need to be restricted or at least minimized.
Matt:

Please know that there are lots of players who support the elimination of re-entry tournaments!

I will actually be playing some of the events because they are not re-entry!

Besides forcing all players to go through a field where the highest skill edges often have the greatest # of entries it REALLY hurts the cash games. I have only been a full-time player for 2 years but I have seen the cash games rapidly decline around the tournament series in LA.

I support the long-term view of poker. If everyone takes what they can in this moment then the future for live poker looks bleak; not that the games won't be beatable, but that the $ up top will shrink and the lifestyle of pro players will be forever altered.

Thanks,
-Sam

Thanks Sam, I agree with some of your points and even wrote an OpEd article about it in 2013.

That's a great article Matt. I'm not planning to be a poker 'lifer' but I sure as heck don't want to see poker dry up in my lifetime. Seems insane for casinos to accelerate the timeline of MTTs just to break-even or be a slight 'winner' after a festival.

On a slightly different topic, what type of payout structure is the best for the poker economy in large fields, say 1000-3000? I saw some complaints about the WSOP payouts but don't quite understand the protest. Thanks in advance!

For the LAPC I prefer a little flatter structure with these parameters

12-13% of the field "In the Money"
9th place to receive roughly 10% of 1st

I have only stayed at Commerce, Doubletree and Embassy Suites in Downey and suggest checking Yelp and Trip Advisor.

These are in no particular order or quality but are all within 10-15 despite traffic.

How have non-CA residents fared with CA taxes (Jock Tax?) on winnings from CA? Is it true that this tax is taken immediately from winnings? Can you offset this with your home State Income taxes? Can any decent accountant handle this?

I've asked this question before, but haven't gotten a completely sufficient answer. I figure plenty of people reading this thread have experience with this issue from the past.

They tax you immediately but can file to get it back.

Any non-CA resident will have 7% deducted from their net winnings(gross minus the buy-in/entry fee) on any amount $1,500 or over. We will issue you a copy of CA 592-B Non-resident Withholding Tax Statement. I am not sure how it is offset by your home state taxes, but I am sure Allen or any other out-of-towner can explain the process. If you are unable to do it through your home state, I know that you can file a 540NR Tax Return with California at the end of the year. I have a link to the instructions for 592-B below. Hope that this info helps.

Need 667 runners to make $100k Guarantee. I would say 800-850 is a fair estimate. Wouldn't surprise me if it went over that.
