Gift from my friends for graduation. I've never had anything over a $75 bottle before.

Out of curiosity when you get a bottle that's a "splurge" do you savor it and make it last? Or just enjoy it?

There won't be another 25 year in my collection anytime soon.

Just bought my first bottle of Scotch, went with Glenfiddich 12. So far I'm enjoying it, at first it was a bit strong, but starting to enough the flavor now.

Any suggestions on what to try next? Also how much difference does the glassware make?

So yeah, I tried Pappy 15 (while my friend tried the 20) and as I looked through the list on their menu, I saw that their most expensive islay was the Port Ellen 25. I remember you trying it, and knew this is one of the only opportunities I'll ever have to try Port Ellen, so I asked if I could have an amount of whatever $20 could get me (a glass is $85 and I already spent $35 on Pappy 15). Since I actually spoke to the bar manager earlier on the phone and he realized it, he was cool with giving me about a third of a glass of Port Ellen 25 for $20, which was really nice of him.

I actually made reservations for the restaurant, but my friends are f***ing nits and went nit-like when they saw the prices lol. Glad I got to hit up the bar at least...both the bartender and the bar manager were chill dudes. I'll try to make at least one trip to Delmonico whenever I'm in Vegas from now on. I guess I should've taken pics but whatever, too late lol

Good lord. It's not good for ones HU game to be staring and drooling at a whiskey list for 20 minutes while playing. What were your thoughts on the 15 vs 20 year Pappy?

Nice gift. Congrats! My personal preference as a whiskey hoarder/nit is to have 1-3 glasses on any particularly good or bad day where I'm feeling especially up for it and then holding on to the last one or two remaining drinks in the bottle until some exceptionally good or bad day comes up .

I just had the Pappy 15...I thought it was pretty good but I myself wouldn't spend anything past $200 on a bottle (even though they are reselling for ~$600) It was extremely fruity and sour, and the taste of plumbs kept coming to mind as I was drinking it. I'm glad I got the opportunity to try it though. And a side disclaimer to everything mentioned in this post - after my experience with a few good bourbons (Weller 12, Pappy 15, Eagle Rare 10, Makers Mark), although I do enjoy them a lot, I think I still strongly prefer islays

If anyone cares, a small detail I forgot to mention about Delmonico is that they serve their whiskies in Glencairn glasses. I guess it's expected with a place that serves that type of whiskey and whatnot, but I thought it was still worth mentioning.

i tried it once and liked it,but its very expansive in europe for a 12year old whisky.(around 100euro)
and for that price i can get some excellent islays.

any of u tried the Balvenie Double Wood 17years yet?

my bottle of the Balvenie 21 port wood is almost empty and i`m thinking about getting a new 1.(i really this whisky)

the prices in europe are almost the same(17y is a bit more)
so i`m not sure if i should get a 4 years younger whisky for the same price as a 21 year old.
i did read
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...postcount=1530
and thx for it
but there arent real comparsions of the 17 double wood and 21 year old

I have my eye on Balvenie, Ardbog, and Laphroaig everytime I walk into the liquor store. Up to this point, I have never even had Scotch outside of doing shots of Dewars. It's been stricltly bourbon due solely to the price, but this will hopefully change here soon.

mann,

WOW. That would be an impressive selection even for a whiskey bar!

A couple of prior posts:

I tried them both again recently and I really like both the 17yo Doublewood and the 21yo Portwood, but I think I'd have to recommend the 21yo Portwood. They are both delicious, but the 17yo DW is a little simpler flavor I think - just a richer and smoother 12yo DW. The 21yo PW is even smoother and has some more complex, spicier flavors going on in addition to the classic Balvenie sweetness. I might flip again based on my mood, though! Still like the 17yo Peated Cask best out of the Balvenies.

I'd steer clear of Ardbog if you've not tried much scotch, try something less extreme first imo.

as noted here before several times;
start with something like balvenie 12 or glenfiddich 12 or macallan 12 or a aberlour or a glenmorangie.
ardbeg is a smokebomb u or hate.
even so its mild and a bit sweet after the smoke.

Yah, I think my first bottle will probably be balvenie 12 due to the fact that everyone itt seems to love it. Ardbog and Laphroaig are pretty similar in regards to their smokiness then?

So, In order to see if it will help our son's eczema, my wife wants us all to try a month of no gluten. Pretty much excludes anything made from a grain like wheat, malt, barley, rye...

No beer, no whisk... Loophole! Distilling spirits basically kills off all of the gluten molecules so I will be on a strict no beer all whiskey diet this month . My liver is scurred. Probably should supplement some wine.

Ish. I've not had the Ardbog but have tried a few Ardbegs and they're at the extreme level of smokiness. The Laphroaig is smoky but not as extreme.

If you do get to them probably try the Laphroaig first. But you could get more of an easy route into seeing if you like islays by trying something more subtly smoky like isle of jura or highland park (or even a blend like JW double black but I'll get slated for saying it).
