Oban's a really nice little town, has a decent distillery tour and is only a few hours drive away!

It's a bit of a journey but if you can make it up to the Isle of Skye and hit Talisker it's an amazing place. Just incredibly beautiful and a great distilery tour too. Glasgow is a pretty cool city now and there's a lot to see there - if you can take in a Celtic or Rangers football game might be pretty cool as well.

Wait until college kids get a hold of this and start shotgunning it. I wonder if I could without immediately vomiting.

Rye fans,

A girl I hang out with who loves whiskey brought over a bottle of this: http://www.highwest.com/spirits/21-y...-mountain-rye/

We did a little taste test of that vs this bottle that I had:
http://www.highwest.com/spirits/16-y...-mountain-rye/

Both were tasty, but I actually like the 16 more. The 16 is spicier and to my palate more flavorful. The 21 was much sweeter (too sweet for me) and also even though both were same 46%, the 21 tasted much hotter to me.

This fact sheet for both is kinda interesting: http://www.highwest.com/wp-content/u...fact-sheet.pdf

Now that they are changing the liquor sales laws here I am hoping to start seeing more of these available up here. Really want to try the willet.

was given a bottle for christmas. My straight whisky experience had been limited to shots of jack in college, but I absolutely love this stuff. I guess I have a new hobby/vice. I have no frame of reference, but the color is really beautiful

its now only bottled in IA, however. made somewhere in IL I believe

Gen, NOTC:

I like Templeton Rye. Really good and really great value.

Another excellent rye I've had recently is Masterson. About double the price of Templeton, though.

Bruichladdich "The Organic"

I finally got around to trying this.

It was not what I was expecting from an Islay whisky at all.

There is no peat smoke here, none. It may be the lightest whisky I have ever tasted. Tasted really clean, malty, straw, lightly salty all very delicate flavors. A little water clouded it up pretty good since it's non chill-filtered. It is bottled at 46% so a teaspoon of water helped bring out some of the flavor for me.

I didn't like it very much at first since I was expecting something polar opposite, but after a while it really grew on me.

Very nice light whisky, would recommend.

I really want to try Bruichladdich Octomore, maybe my next bottle.

Finally had some willet it was the 8-10 aged. Honestly no complaints, but not great. Does that suffice?

JH: Nothing wrong about that at all. I'm a big fan of whiskey by itself and also a big fan of whiskey in cocktails. Simple drinks like Maker's and ginger are perfectly good, but if you like those, I recommend you expand into classic whiskey based cocktails. See the OOT Bar Thread for lots of great ideas.

TSC: I'm guessing you had this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willett_Pot_Still_Reserve which IMO is not very good at all. The bottles that look like this are the delicious ones:

Hi EDF,

Bored watching nfc championship game tonight and made up a new bourbon cocktail that turned out pretty well.

Muddle 5ish blackberries with 5ish blueberries, .5 tsp sugar, and juice of .5 lime
Add 2 parts bourbon, 1 part gran marnier or similar
Add crushed ice and shake well
Pour into highball glass and stir with 2 parts seltzer water

Sit back and enjoy. Probably better for spring/summertime but wife had blackberries and blueberries in the fridge and it seemed like a good idea. Anyhow, pretty delicious so far!

Went to Reserve 101 in Houston last week. What a great whisky bar. If you are ever near downtown Houston definitely check it out. Here is their partial list:

I got to try so many new ones. Too bad I only remember half of them.

Nice thread. I've decided to start buying and drinking Whisky after reading. Bought my first bottle today "Jura, scotch 10 years", "light and delicate with a warming honey finish" - sounded like a good place to start. It tasted pretty good, although I have nothing to compare it to

Isle of Jura is a very respectable whisky. Good choice!

This evening, I'm enjoying a wonderful birthday gift from a friend:

Citrus and sweetness on the nose. Light wood at the front mellowing into warm smooth buttery notes. Mild spice and fruit underneath throughout. Absolutely delightful.

From what I've read, many can distinguish cinnamon, lemon and currant flavors. I don't, personally, at least not very distinctly. The aftertaste definitely has a cinnamon note, though; so it's certainly in there.

I've picked up a few bottles recently and felt I could contribute a bit. Not a very serious whisky drinker but have had a taste for the stuff for a few years.

Balvenie Doublewood:
Amazingly smooth and sweet, vanilla, while not having a gross syrup quality that you find in cheap bourbons. Seems like a really good value to me also.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask:
Also surprisingly smooth and the flavor blew me away, having never had an Islay before. Took a few refills to really synthesize all the flavor, really nice smooth and long finish.

Redbreast 12:
Not bad but nothing unique, nice flavor, little bit sweet but is definitely lacking something... Would not buy again probably.

Brought a bottle of Bowmore Cask Strength to a get together the other night. It was the hit of the party, even the non whiskey drinkers liked it. Picked it up in the dutyfree at the London airport and someone mentioned to me that it isnt available in the U.S.
