When I was younger... When I was younger...

I had a paper route. Used my bike. Except when there was a blizzard, then my mom drove me in her AMC Pacer

I just looked at the Texas Instruments website, which is what we used at school. Sure, they are full-color and perhaps more powerful now, but they still cost around $200 each.

Pretty sure my parents paid +$800 for our 1st VCR in the early 80's.

They also paid +$300 for our 1st cordless phone that sucked ass. The max range from the receiver was about 10' and it had a 1.5' antenna. I still remember my dad taking it outside, slamming it down on the driveway and saying "this thing was a huge waste of money and a POS" after he bought a better phone.

These look like a lot of fun to create, but not very fun when you get half-way through and forget to press space.

Another 70's college moment - My dad worked for IBM and when I went to college he got hold of a loaner Magcard II Selectric for me. The magnetic cards were the same size as punch cards and held about 8k characters. You could correct and format with it. I made all my drinking money letting people use it during term paper season.

I had a paper route. Collecting money sucked. I had to put inserts into the paper which also sucked. It was just a weekly paper though. The daily morning paper I'm sure was a hard job, but you could make like $100 a month!!

Our first VCR was something like $1100. It had a "remote" with a cord. I believe this was it:

I spent all my paper route money on baseball cards.

Ditto the paper route-hated collecting-and my damn parents always had to borrow our collections to pay the bills. I grew up thinking getting your credit-card rejected was just a normal occurrence and a typical mistake that happened to everyone as this is how my dad explained it.

Remember throwing people into swimming pools? Pre-cellphone obviously. And memorizing all of your friends' phone numbers?

What's a bar code? Self check out- lol. Cashiers actually had to type in the price, and good ones were pretty darn fast at it. Then they put your groceries in brown paper bags and carried them to your car.

I remember my two brothers and myself couldn't wait to get outside in the summertime to play tackle football with the three brothers across the street. We would have a
week long Monopoly game on a friends front porch. I remember stuffing as many kids into a trunk as possible to sneak into the drive-in theater on Saturday night. We would dig fox holes in the garden for our plastic army men and then "bomb" them with dirt clods. We didn't think twice about a 10 mile hike to go fishing if we heard of a new place. God I feel old!

In the beginning you almost had to have both Betamax and VHS as movies were usually released on one or the other.

Schwinn was gutted then sold in a bankrupcty auction a decade ago and the brand name now gets tacked on crappy bicycles mass produced in China.

Crappy bikes were much crappier when I was a kid. Cheap huffys has their frames braised instead of welded. The frame in my brother's bike broke, not even on a bug jump. Nowadays, the cheap toysrus bikes have big fat welds.

Also, cars were much less reliable. 100000 miles was a lot. Transmissions and alternators often went out at 50000. Tires blew out way more often.

We used to play cocoleavio where would we hide in our neighbor's driveways and backyards on our block to stay away from the hunters.

Try to hide in a neighbor's backyard these days and see what happens.
