What are some good songs/lyrics to play for 8th grade class to use in lessons about growth/character/motivation?

My wifey teaches an 8th grade Pride Period to mostly boys. She is going to, once a week, print out the lyrics, play the song for the students and ask questions like...What do you think the artist is trying to convey? What does this mean to you? Is this a helpful message? Etc. Deep cuts are OK. From Van Morrison to PJam to Usher to Arctic Fire. Help my teacher wife TwoplusTwo, You’re our only hope!(No guns, violence or wrecking balls please)

Not sure it's exactly what you're looking for but I liked Cat's in the Cradle when I was that age. And it's a great song to ask questions to the kids and make them think about the message. Harry Chapin's original or the Ugly Kid Joe version (this was popular when I was in 8th grade).

I was a lot older than you (just graduated college) when that Ugly Kid Joe version came out, but you're almost as old as I am now.

Refugee - Tom Petty

Somewhere, somehow,
Somebody must have kicked you around some.
Who knows? Maybe you were kidnapped,
Tied up, taken away, and held for ransom.

It don't really matter to me, baby,
Everybody's had to fight to be free,

1st bolded is my favorite TP line.
2nd bolded is just the plain truth/lesson.

We don't need to be introducing ramblin' and gamblin' notions into these young impressionable minds.

Country Boy Can Survive by Hank Jr.

The lyric "I'd love to spit some beechnut in that dude's eye" alone should make this song mandatory listening for all impressionable school children.

Thanks all. Keep em coming.

We decided to start with Rush.

"Freewill"

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

This song - apart from being a Freudian nightmare - contains a great life lesson.

EDIT: Wow, just found this terrific version
