Loving this. It’s from a famous manga about a wine completion to determine who will inherit the world’s most expensive wine collection, the dead man’s daughter or his protégé.

So much fun.
Dom, I watched it all because of your recommendation and enjoyed it. I like that even though the ending isn't a surprise, it's still an enjoyable ride.

Does anybody really know that much about wine?

If you've not seen it, Sour Grapes, is a great documentary. Young Indonesian guy cons wine buffs out of millions making wine in his mothers sink.

I watched it, but I was hoping for more experts tasting the fakes. One guy did say he thought one that the others liked tasted like skunk piss.

Pretty amazing story about him and the uncles who robbed the banks, too.

If you like Sour Grapes, check out Made You Look, which is a documentary about a similar scam, but with paintings instead.

Haven't seen Drops of God yet, but Somm goes into just what it takes to become a master sommelier. Only something like 100 people in 50 years have passed the test (can't remember the exact numbers). From a single sip, you need to be able to pick the type of grape, country of origin, vintage, and I think even the specific vineyard the wine comes from. You may even be supposed to know all that just from the smell, I can't quite remember. It's all pretty ludicrous.

I've seen Made You Look, and it's a fascinating story, especially since the forger is a math professor. I also love Welles's F For Fake, which looks at three great forgers, one being Welles himself in that film.

I watched F for Fake after someone picked it in one of those movie drafts. I think it was probably you haha.

Decided to finally binge Sucession after there was so much buzz around it. UHG! I had watched the first couple of episodes when it first came out and stopped because I thought it kinda sucked. Plus I hated every single character.

This show is the definition of mediocre although I did warm to a few of the characters. Especially the oddballs (Greg, Roman, Conner) for their comedic relief. I will say the kid who played Greg gave a phenominal performance as the awkward fish out of water.

But the plot/story was full of holes. There would be some major plot point that would just disappear. There were major happenings and twists that just got forgotten which I found frustrating. I found it to be a very sloppily written story. It was almost as if the writers didn't watch previous episodes and there were major continuity mistakes.

Somm is pretty much everything I want in a documentary. Watched years ago not knowing or caring anything about wine and now I can’t drink a glass without at least briefly thinking or wondering about it from a sommelier’s perspective.

Yeah, I love documentaries that follow small groups of people that devote a huge amount of their time on niche little areas that most people don't really think much about.

A few that you might be interested in if you haven't seen them already:

Word Wars - the world of competitive scrabble
Wordplay - crosswords
Spellbound - spelling bees
King of Kong - I think most people have seen this by now, but just in case you haven't

Would also be interested if anybody has any other recs in a similar vein.

Also love there. Probably think of of more later but this is fun off the top of my head.

Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters
Strings: A Yo-Yo Documentary

I have seen the Tetris one. Haven't seen Strings, but it has 0 votes on imdb and there is seemingly no evidence of it existing outside of that page. Are you sure that is the right one?

Yeh sorry I noticed that but was too late to edit. I think I was getting confused with the 6-part Netflix series, 'We Are the Champions', which is worth a watch even though some of the episodes are a bit mixed.

I love much of Errol Morris's work, and his Fast, Cheap & Out of Control looks at four men with somewhat unusual occupations. One of the men is a topiary gardener who worked at the place a few miles from where I live.

Although the men have different occupations, Morris finds similarities among them. So while it isn't about a small group of people pursuing an unusual hobby or endeavor, it's a film with great charm.

I suppose this should be in the film thread, but what the hell.

Oh, I have seen that too lol. And yeah, it was a pretty uneven series, but I think the yoyo ep was the best of the bunch.

Started Barry about a week ago. Season 2, episode 5, ronny/lilly is epic, eyes wide, jaw-dropping artistry.

Still Michael J. Fox documentary. This is mostly interviews of him along with footage of how he is currently dealing with his Parkinson's. It goes back to his early days and chronicles his life, mostly up until he reveals his diagnosis to the world.

He doesn't feel sorry for himself at all, nor does he want anyone else to. He tackles life head on.

We really enjoyed this and I would definitely recommend.
