Showed my class In the Mood for Love tonight. I'm guessing I have now seen it over forty times. I could easily watch it another forty.

The USA Halloween season is coming up. Her are five spooky newer movies about the supernatural, some well known, some obscure, that I found worth watching:

Talk to Me (2023, streaming but expensive, Australian) Whew. Yikes. Very spooky and scary and well-done. Grade A-.

Popes Exorcist (2023, Netflix) this a mass commercial film about the exorcism of boy in Italy. It stars Russel Crowe. It copies a lot from the original Exorcist movie. The last half-hour has some decent special effects but otherwise it is not very well-done. Grade B

Nefarious (2023, eng, hoopla for free) this a story of a possible demon possession of a murderer on death row. A psychiatrist attempt to interview the inmate to ascertain whether he is insane or ready for the electric chair. There is a lot of dialogue and great acting which may seem dull but isn’t, and the final ½ hr is brutal to watch. The movie has caused unwarranted controversy because it seems to be told from a religious point of view. Grade A-.

Enys Men (2022, radio broadcasts are key here and are in english but not much other dialogue. HULU) It is a masterful “twilight zone”-like presentation of Cornish folklore and spirits on an island. Past time and present time are mixed together. It intertwines several tragic stories that happened on the island , one involving the main character. Man’s spirit can live on. It is not a scary movie or horror show. The stories are told indirectly through flashes, and visual clues, and the viewer has to put them together. I’m afraid most people will not understand what is going on without multiple views or without some knowledge of Cornish folklore and their symbols. But it is well done, unique, and thoughtful. For me it is a Grade A.

The Innocents (2021, eng sub, amc, shudder) Creepy Swedish story (eng subtitle) about young children slowly becoming aware of their own telekinetic and other psychic powers and using them to play and then abusing them. Warning that there are unpleasant realistic scenes of pets and children being seriously harmed. I almost didnt post it because of that. The final scenes are tension packed. Well done, but frightening as hell. Grade A-

Don't get nightmares.

(Hoopla and Kanopy are legitimate library sites in the US where residents can watch a lot of movies for fee. Anybody anywhere can stream one for free at home since it is often possibe to find an "alternative" website that streams it.)

Watched it on Kanopy. Lot of fun. btw, to all it refers to Chinese chess not western chess. Also, I found out that on debut in NYC it had a two year run in the theater!

Based on the novel by Jack London. This was really, really good. Beautifully shot on 16mm interspersed with archival footage, and with a great central performance by Luca Marinelli. Somewhat experimental but very accessible and engaging, highly recommended.
Gave this a watch on Kanopy. I was amazed again about the amount of effort the producers put into getting the fashion and set design, hair styles, clothing, cars, mannersims right to portray Naples during the post WW2 period, guessing 1955 to 1970. Agree the prime actor was great. Its about an extreme attempt at social climbing going from being an impovershied uneducated guy to a self-educated successful writer in order to porperly match up with an upper class girl that he loves. interesting watch

Not sure if anyone else might be interested in this, but since Band of Brothers is held in high regard I thought I'd post it. AskHistorians on reddit is one of the best corners of the internet and they posted a thread covering various questions they've answered regarding the miniseries. I spend way too much time reading about the Ukraine conflict to read through it now, but I'm hoping to get to it eventually. Should be interesting:

AskHistorians is probably the best sub on Reddit. Super strict posting guidelines usually ensures great content. I’d also recommend r/HistoriansAnswered, it’s just a bot that grabs and reposts questions that have sufficient answers and/or engagement.

I'm in shock. I just now learned that there is a second version of I'm in the Mood for Love that is a director-approved remaster 4k version and was released in 2022 or so. I'm way behind times. I had to watch that version. It has a clearer image, remixed sound, has a slightly narrower aspect ratio, and the color is modified to have more of a green tint to it. The older version has a more blue tint. Scenes are unchanged. They didnt re-label the name of the new version so its hard to tell which one you are choosing to watch. The time length of the new version is 1:39:05 versus the old 1:38:37 is one way tell. On Criterion, the old one is called the alternate version. The new one is getting some web criticism for the color change. The new green one seems fine to me.

I noticed a lot of things that I missed before on previous viewings. There are more cinematic techniques and story going on than I realized. Great movie. Great soundtrack. Great cinematography. Perfect actors.

I told my class to focus on a few things during In the Mood for Love: clocks, telephones, mirrors, red, and green. This week I will see what they noticed. (No one noticed that Maggie Chung is wearing different clothes during the scene the second time they have dinner, and I don't expect they would.)

Hurrah, I noticed that different dress in the scene where they eat steak dinners in a diner for the first time and I had to rewind to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. Some other features:

1)Many shots of Magg Cheung (Mrs Chan) swaying her back side as she walked with a succession of 21 distinct tight form-fitting cheongsam dresses. That tested my "male gaze",

2)I think one outdoor scene starts over again after a few seconds,

3)Towards the end Mr Chow is frantically searching his room for something missing and I didnt know what it was until later I guessed it might be for
Spoiler:
pink slippers

4)Towards the end I dont think either of them are
Spoiler:
wearing wedding bands

Some memorable scenes: Mrs Chan crying, scenes in pouring rain, and smoke billowing from Mr Chow's cigarette

Its great that you have a class with whom to talk about this stuff.

I used to tell the class that the only reason I show the film is to watch Maggie walk in those tight dresses. Even though that's a bit sexist, no one seemed to mind.

And the time order can be confusing. You see a couple shots where he's standing in a doorway bathed in yellow light that are flashforwards, and he discovers the cigarette and that missing object before the scene when we see her in his room.

Such a great film.

I think the big star of this film is Maggie's wardrobe, but I also love the hallway and staircases where they always seem to pass each other.

Talk To Me is a well-made, well-acted Australian horror film. But it's so depressingly bleak and dark that I would not want to see it again.

Since Haunting in Venice I've watched Branagh's two previous Poirot films. Haunting is the best by a good margin. It has a sense of atmosphere and thrills that the others lack.
