Darkness darkness darkness, rain rain rain, grime grime grime... we get the point! It's trying too hard. Also Burton's Gotham was a campy kinda of grim.

Lol, okay.

I really liked Belfast. Seems like one of those movies not "important" enough to ever win Best Picture, but the acting, direction, and cinematography were all great. It's basically an ode to Brannagh's family and hometown, told through a child's eyes.

I've loved Ciaran Hinds as an actor for a long time, great to see him get recognized with an Oscar nom.

Don't get me wrong, I thought The Batman was far more aesthetically interesting than any Marvel film. Although that's not too meaningful a comparison because Marvel films have no aesthetic sense beyond bright colours. It's weird how they're so visually dull even when depicting some crazy space station or alien world.

Interestingly, Coda is the betting (-180,Bovada ) favorite now to win Best Picture at tonight's Oscars. It's a pleasant, likeable film but this is surprising given the praise Power of the Dog got.

While I do think that 'Color Grading' and 'Art Direction' are critical components to making a good film, I am not sure that either for me is the basis on which a film is good or not.

that being said... I PREFER a much more Natural or grunge look than one of over saturation, but that is a personal preference. Probably based around to much visual stimulation.

On a side note, a new Criterion release... day 1

Aside from the elephant that is now in the room, I agree -- I thought the telecast was actually pretty good.

Still dragged on for 3.5 hours. About 2 hours and 15 minutes through I thought it was going to be sub-3 hours, but there were still more awards than I realized -- a few editing ones and so forth. But I did like the truncated awards in some spots.

Also thought it was nice to get back to being a bit more roast-y. Thought Schumer/Sykes/Hall were good, the King Richard-Spiderman-Tammy Faye bit was quite funny.

Yeah what a trainwreck of an Oscar show. Will Smith takes a swing, " oh btw, there's a genocide in the Ukraine", Liza Minelli, just a name a few of the many memorable moments ....somehow Coda wins

Coda was a little hokey but ok. I had to look up what year I saw it. I think they were trying to check some boxes with it.

I would have done the same as Smith, a truly horrible thing to say to/about a woman, their hair is a very important part of their identity.

You want to show your woman support, you turn to her and say "This ain't it. Let's get out of here. I don't care about my award, I care about you."

Nothing humiliates a performer more than seeing someone walk out on them. Certainly not some stupid performative slap and then making your wife sit there until it's time for your glory. Had he done that, I would have had nothing but respect for him.

I'd heard Coda would really benefit from the ranked voting in that no one who watched Coda was going to rank it outside their top few choices even if not many put it #1. POTD had a lot of #1s but a lot of #10s from people who thought it was just straight boring.

Would you have genuinely laughed about it for awhile first like he did?

Does anyone know if the joke was scripted? I have no idea how those kinds of things go. I didn't think the joke was particularly funny.

I assume all the jokes are scripted, I can't imagine there is a lot of improv going on.
