Just finished watching this and my rating would be much closer to TheCroShow's than to parisron's. While I don't consider it to be the best movie I've seen in the last year, it's definitely much better than okay. I thought it was very good, from Zhao's direction to the usual great performances from Frances McDormand and David Strathairn. And I was particularly impressed with the performances of all of the non-actors in the cast. Just phenomenal performances. So good in fact, that I wonder if their scenes and dialogue were even fully scripted.

I Care A Lot - The sort of twisted satirical comedy that really appeals to me . Rosamund Pike's character is thoroughly, enjoyable despicable. Her only redeeming quality is that she's no worse than everyone else. Maybe. It's a close-run thing, she really is quite awful. Within five minutes you'll be hoping she gets her comeuppance, then spend the rest of the film wondering if it will ever happen. It does somewhat cop out though, not quite fully following through with its brutal amorality. I would still heartily recommend to anyone with a dark sense of humour.

was not my cup of tea.

he was a star in mystery train. a weird comedy something or the other movie. did have that guy steve buschumi or something like that that went on to become a bad guy weirdo as well. that movie although strange might be great to watch if you can find it.
I'll have to check that out. I never knew Screamin' Jay Hawkins was in a movie. Honestly I never would have guessed he was even still alive in 1989.
I love Steve Buscemi also.

Anyone else catch Sidney Lumets 'the pawnbroker'... on AMC a few days ago?

Rod Steiger gives an amazing performance of a Jewish holocaust survivor that owns a Pawnshop in a slum of new york where he judges and despises those he exploits...

I worked on Lost Highway! I don't remember DFW, but I was only on the shoot for three weeks.

Saw it many, many years ago when it was broadcast on local UHF stations.

Managed to catch a few newer/upcoming releases this week.

Promising Young Woman - This was excellent. There are not enough good things to say about Carey Mulligan and the writing is great. 9/10

United States vs Billie Holiday - Andra Day is great, the movie is not. It needed to be rewritten, redirected, and reedited. 4/10

Cherry - An absolute mess. Not sure how they made a movie about opioid addiction and bank robbing feel boring and repetitive. It feels like three different movies stitched together into some kind of Sid from Toy Story monster. It starts as a whimsical pastel coloured bored college kids falling in love story that's okay but nothing special. Then it turns into a Full Metal Jacket homage that's decent. And finally flies completely off the rails into something that feels like they made 90% of a spoof comedy about opioid addiction then realized that was probably a bad idea and tried to edit it into something serious? Just woof. 3/10

That is cool! Did you get to meet DL on the set?

One of the great things about Mulholland Drive is how on repeated viewings you notice new things that give clues as to what is going on.
Spoilers just in case...

Spoiler:
For example I forgot about the scene where the old couple leaves Betty at the airport, and then they are shown in their car just sitting there with creepy, ghoulish grins on their faces. It is an odd and disquieting scene, but I think it highlights that what you are watching is Betty/Diane's nightmare, and also her sense that these people were laughing behind her back at her dreams of stardom.

Nomadland Still need to watch it a second time, but I highly recommend Zhao's previous film, The Rider if you haven't seen it already. She does a fantastic job of extracting performances from non-actors. The lead in The Rider is a cowboy who suffered a major head injury during a rodeo, it's about his journey and whether he'll return back to normal, also dives deep into the mental challenges faced in a "toughen up, buttercup" world of tough guys. I get all choked up when I think of that movie.

Yep. I was the location rep for the house where the guy gets killed by the glass table. So I technically wasn't working for the production, I was representing the interests of the owner of that house lol.

My best friend and writing partner's mom had (still has) the largest location library in L.A. And I worked a lot for her on various movies and TV shows. It was awesome. I got yelled at by Oliver Stone on the set of The Doors because I wouldn't let him ruin the tile of a house I was repping.

David Lynch was always understanding of what he could and could not do in the house...and would always yell my name, "DOMINIC...can we do this?" And I'd give him a yay or nay.

We happened to be at the craft services table at the same time once, and we had a 5 minute discussion on why Red Vines were better than Twizzlers. He really thought the texture of Red Vines was far superior, and the sugar rush much better. I said I could finish a whole package of Red Vines, easy, no problem, and he grasped my shoulders and said, "We understand one another, Dominic."

I seriously doubt I understand David Lynch, but that was pretty cool.

Oh, and years later, he remembered me when my GF and I went to Lynch Fest in L.A. a couple of years ago, and we had bought the package that allowed us into a cocktail party with Lynch. He seemed quite excited when he realized I worked briefly on Lost Highway. He wanted to know if I was still in the location repping biz, and I said, no, but he insisted on telling my GF how important that was on any movie set. "If you don't treat the house with respect, than no other production will be able to use that house ever again, and that would be a shame."

That was funny.

Funny... I was working/organizing some art I have yesterday and I had forgotten I have this Screen Print tucked away by Durieux.

It's a beautiful print.

LH is such a great movie... a real mind F*ck as you're watching it UNTIL the film reaches the end... where Lynch wraps it all up.

That poster's classic. I had forgotten about Lurie.

It's interesting that I have people who, when the tell me to see a movie, I always see it. It's never the film critic for the New Yorker. In the case of Mystery Train, it was an old gambler playing one-pocket at the local pool room. Impeccable taste in movies.

Lost Highway is my favorite Lynch film. Second is a two-way tie between Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet.

Mulholland Drive is much better than Blue velvet. Mulholland Drive is excellent Single-Malt Scotch; Blue Velvet is slamming down a cheap bottle of Imperial Whisky with a beer chaser. So it is only a tie if you think the above are equal. Which they ain't.

I have spoken. And it is the Word of God.

Pabst Blue Ribbon, Motherfuc*ker!

And I'm glad you guys enjoyed the story...I know I drop a lot of names in my stories on 2+2, but I sometimes forget about all the famous people I've actually met lol. They aren't to impress - I only bring them up because I think it may be something you guys would enjoy hearing.

And David Lynch was cool AF.
