That's one of my all-time favorite movies. In fact, it was my choice for my favorite film from 1956 in Dom's thread from several years ago where we all listed our favorite films for every year from the time we were born.

I have watched Forbidden Planet literally 100+ times over the years.

I've seen it plenty of times, but nowhere near a hundred. I can remember seeing it when it came out in my hometown theater. I can almost remember which seat I sat in.

I can even watch on the tube now, and not crack up when Leslie Nielsen comes on--that's how forcefully his role as a starship trooper has ingrained him in my mind as a serious actor. Earl Holliman's cookie is another classic of the 50s sci-fi. Great film.

Words on Bathroom Walls It's about a high school student struggling with schizophrenia. The basis of the movie is pretty much stolen from the Showtime series United States of Tara, but I didn't mind that. The cast is strong. Charlie Plummer is good in the lead role, Taylor Russell stole the show. She is going to be a star. I haven't seen Waves yet, but she received some nominations and awards for her role in that film. This movie gets a little cheesy at times, but overall it was very good. 8/10

Otherlife is a nice little film which would be described as a Black Mirror sorta long feature. Would recommend to any sci-fi buffs

Mary Poppins Returns Emily Blunt gives us an amazing performance as the title character but the story is a rehash of the original and the songs are forgettable. And that is unfortunately a deal breaker for a musical.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is an interesting one. I sometimes forget PSH was a top 10 actor of all time and this is a good reminder. I’ve got a soft spot for Hawke too. The direction almost certainly was an inspiration for the Safdie brothers. And while I liked Good Time a lot, this movie just felt so unrelentingly tense and upsetting that it was hard to enjoy. The movie was lesser than the sum of its parts for me. I thought it was just ok and not worth the anguish.

Has anyone watched Antebellum yet? It's on demand for $20. Not sure if I want to spend it.

I doubt there is any movie worth paying $20 to watch online. But certainly not his. I have not seen it but its 5.5 on IMDB and that means it sucks. Lost of very bad reviews mixed in with the few good ones. In addition 28% on RT with 59% Audience score.

also Marisa Tomei, Michael Shannon and more . What a cast. Not sure I've seen it but even if its a downer I'll watch. As a plus I found out you can see this for free if you have a US library card by logging into Hoopla. I'm only now finding out about this cool service.

I wrote this about it five years ago in the previous Talk About Movies thread when someone asked me what movies I actually liked:
Quote:
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was good for its realism (except for the guy who does the robbery—he seemed too convenient and willing a tool to just appear at Ethan Hawke and PSH's disposal), but it suffered from uninteresting scenery (strip mall, office building, middle-class house, etc.) and the characters weren't likable, but I think it's good enough to note.

From technical production (graphics, visuals, background music, etc) standpoint this was grade A and was worth watching. IMO It would have been better had the characters been able to show any other emotion besides rage or fear. Emotionless automatons or enraged maniacs are the two main character types these days.

The Hater reminds me a lot of The Talented Mr. Ripley where the protagonist is infatuated by the bourgeois lifestyle of the rich ; definitely worth a watch and quite actual in its depiction of the downsides of socia-media.

For online classes, I usually give students a film from Kanopy to watch. Last week, though, I wanted to show Raging Bull, so I streamed it for the class. I told them they could watch it on their own but most decided to watch along with me. They kept me a half hour after class was supposed to end asking questions and talking about the movie. That was fun.

Raging Bull is a good movie. however, these days, my biggest memory of it is that it was a precursor to Goodfellas (and then Casino). I can never picture robert de niro as jake lamotta instead of jimmy conway or sam rothstein.

Martha Marcy May Marlene - I don’t get the love for this at all, thought it was very average, dialogue between the sisters felt like rly bad acting

Watched Kill Bill, vol. 1 for probably the fourth or fifth time last night but for the first time in over a decade. Even better than I remembered, and to my surprise I now think it might actually be Tarantino's best movie. Absolutely no one else could have made this movie, and the startling amount of creativity and originality are a big part of what makes it great. The crazy musical choices all fit perfectly, the movie flies by, the choreography of the fight scenes kept my attention the whole time (no small feat given I usually tune out during prolonged action sequences), and the movie feels so damn different in a good way. Just such a distinctive vision that lives up to its huge amount of ambition, awesome movie.

Rewatched Donnie Brasco on Netflix because of our discussion about top mob movies. Great film all around. Made me realize that the Irishman was so disappointing to me because the character development pales in comparison to movies like this. Refreshing to see this world through the eyes of an informant and a loyal, albeit pathetic, middling mobster. You can definitely see it’s influence on similar media (Sopranos, The Wire, etc).

I’m not a huge Pacino or Depp fan, but they both crush this. Also Paul Giamatti shows up as an FBI agent for 2 lines in one of his first roles, which was trippy. Final verdict: Fuhgeddaboudit.

This. But I'll be able to stream it on my smart phone. That'll be a treat.
