I found it pretty hard going even by Godard's standards when I saw it 30 years ago, though the end was amusing.

I much prefer Weekend from that period.

I watched Paterson with Adam Driver directed by Jim Jarmusch. Pretty underwhelming and I really wanted to like it. It’s just too damn whimsical to be relatable. His wife especially did not feel like a real person. There was something cool about the poetry he wrote, but maybe that’s just a testament to Driver’s skills.

They do lots of cutesy ****, like the leads name is Paterson and that’s also the name of the town he lives in. But it all felt pretty confusing and unsatisfying to me.

Full Contact (1992) Directed by Ringo Lam. With Yun-Fat Chow, Simon Yam, Ann Bridgewater, Anthony Chau-Sang Wong. Two friends get involved with a gang of criminals who are excessively violent and deceptive. So the favor is returned. And the friends themselves have issues, same woman and etc. Not a bad flick with a lot of violence, cool tough guy and tough girl talk, some sleazy sex, cool knifes, and shoot'em up killings, which is always a plus.

Four guns out of five.

Chocolate (2008) Directed by Prachya Pinkaew. With JeeJa Yanin, Hiroshi Abe, Pongpat Wachirabunjong, Taphon Phopwandee. An autistic girl with powerful martial art skills looks to settle her ailing mother's debts by seeking out the ruthless gangs that owe her family money. This movie starts out slow but builds up in action as it progresses. The martial art sequences, especially towards the end are quite good and you can see the influence of Jackie Chan movies. But the ending fight scene is unique and quite spectacular.

Five kicks to the head out of five.

I liked Paterson. It's Jarmusch, so there's going to be some whimsy and weird stuff--the guy casts Screamin' Jay Hawkins in his films, fer Chris's sake. But everything worked for me, plus I like William Carlos Williams; I like Paterson; submarines; Adam Driver; Bulldogs; stars from Mystery Train and Pistol Opera--the whole package. I guess I drank the Kool-Aid on this one.

If you watch Chocolate, watch the outtakes after the credits where they show all the stunts going wrong and the crew visiting the stunt men in the hospital, etc. Whew...

Paterson is beyond outstanding.

Boxes, circles, rectangles, angling lines. Words, squares, interiorization, externalized world building. Discipline, allusions, duality, routine.

Hints of Stranger than Paradise. Tastes of Dead Man. Salutes to Wes Anderson. An English Bulldog.

William Carlos Williams, Method Man, acceptance, hope.

God only knows how many times you can watch this film before you stop seeing into the deep screen and thematically grasping all that's available.

Jarmusch is a Gift.

Has anyone watched Nomadland? I'm supposed to be reading the book for my book club but am behind schedule and might not get to it in time.

Watched Demolition Man for the first time last night after being intrigued by an Elon Musk tweet a few weeks ago about it being prescient. I'm not sure how prescient it really was, but it was entertaining af, with a lot of the dumber, more eye-rolly parts mostly just adding to the charm. Was actually surprised by how funny some of the jokes were and the movie's sensor of humor in general. Considering I haven't watched many popcorn movies the last few years, it was a bit of a refreshing treat.

I rewatched Mulholland Drive last night, it's on HBO Max. Incredible movie, Lynch's masterpiece imo. Other directors have tried to capture the feel of a dream/nightmare on film, few if any have ever succeeded like Lynch did here.

Incredibly neither the film or Naomi Watts got Oscar noms, which is criminal. Watts is insanely good in this... not hyperbole to say one of the greatest movie performances of all time.

I always recommend Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon for a guide, of sorts, to Mulholland Drive.

So far this semester my students have seen La Jetee, City Lights, In The Mood For Love, and Raging Bull. I'm trying my best to give them an education.

screaming jay is hard to take as just a singer of the blues but more of a comedian.
was not my cup of tea.

he was a star in mystery train. a weird comedy something or the other movie. did have that guy steve buschumi or something like that that went on to become a bad guy weirdo as well. that movie although strange might be great to watch if you can find it.

Walking out if the theater after seeing that one I had one of the queasiest, most uneasy feelings of my life. Felt the same after Inland Empire.

A testament to very powerful art.

Lynch has that effect on you. David Foster Wallace had an excellent longform essay about David Lynch which he wrote while visiting the set of Lost Highway, well worth reading if you haven't read it:

Silk Road 4/10. Stuff made up, documentaries are better. Or read American Kingpin

Kid Detective 7/10. Enjoyed this one. Easy to watch. Some laughs. Could've been better but still worth a lazy evening watch.
