Saw Parasite again last night. Confirmed one of the best films I’ve seen in some time. Best of the year for sure.

See it in theatre if you can.

One more day until I finally get to see the Irishman here in LV... unfortunately, it only playing in one theater in the bad part of town... the things I do for Scorsese.

It will probably be just like some other gangster movie made by some other director starring some other actors... so I guess that means it will probably suck.

Urban Rashomon (Khalik Allah, 2013)

Antonyms for Beauty (Khalik Allah, 2013)
https://vimeo.com/70537210

Interesting. 21 and 27 minutes long shorts about a guy living on the streets called Frenchie, and about Khalik Allah himself and his work. He's definitely got photography skills. Would recommend watching Urban Rashomon first as he addresses some of the problematic aspects of these there. Also, Frenchie is hooked on something called K2 which reminded me of this song that I like a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jc5twbQcH0

Saw Motherless Brooklyn tonight. Not great but not bad either. I think Edward Norton is just fine in it; however, I can't help but see Alec Baldwin as Trump. Most of you will figure it out pretty quickly.

My eyes were absolutely fixated on the screen and I barely moved a muscle from about 20 minutes in till the end.

Definitely a moviegoing experience.

Finally... having never seen it, I will get my chance to watch Roma as Netflix has made a deal with Criterion to publish the film on disc.
Thank god.

The Irishman

Saw this today in the theater. 3 hours, 20 minutes long, and I didn't feel it at all. This might turn out to be Scorsese's best film, as crazy as that sounds.

Pacino, DeNiro, Keitel, Jesse Plemons, Bobbt Cannavale, Jack Huston, Anna Pacquin, Stephen Graham, Ray Romano, Aleksa Palladino, Kathrine Narducci, Sebastian Maniscalco, Stephanie Kurtzuba, and so many more.....holy cow, what a cast.

Oh yeah, and Joe Pesci in one of the great performances of the last decade or so. This isn't My Cousin Vinny Joe Pesci. This isn't Casino or Goodfellas Joe Pesci - you know, loud, pushy, threatening - a goombah.

In this role, Pesci is quiet. Contemplative. The Voice of Reason. But he's still scary as ****. He whispers, he watches, he advises, he hints. He influences everything around him. He's the middle man, between Fat Tony Salerno and Jimmy Hoffa. He's DeNiro's character's mentor. And man, does he shine. Just riveting in every way.

DeNiro is great in what is probably an incredibly difficult role - he's a reactor. He follows orders, he kills....and yet doesn't understand why his daughter is scared of him.

Pacino as Hoffa is also great...it's so thrilling to see these three legends in scenes together.

The "anti-ageing" effects work great and are not noticeable.

The only thing I'd say is, that I'd want more - it might've made a great TV series. I wanted more of this world.

****ing heartbreaking ending, too.

I remember the whole "Jimmy Hoffa is missing" stuff when I was a kid. There used to be many jokes about where he might be - mostly about how he probably ended up in the concrete mix that helped make Giants Stadium in NJ.

Great, great movie. Best film I've seen this year.

Yeah, agree with all of that. Also made me simultaneously nostalgic and a little bit sad to think about a future where none of these guys are around anymore.

I might even go and see it again before it hits netflix. I've been thinking about it quite a bit since.

It’s not just Scorsese that still “has it,” either. Editor Thelma Schoonmaker and writer Steve Zallian are also at the top of their long-impressive games.

The closest theater that is showing it is in Bonita Springs on the west coast of Florida, about 135 miles away. In fact, that theater in Bonita Springs is the only theater in the entire state of Florida where you can go to see the movie.

I realize that Netflix wants people to watch the movie on its streaming service rather than in a movie theater, but that's just plain ridiculous.
Hallelujah! I don't know what happened, but The Irishman is now being screened in several theaters in Miami, including a Landmark theater just 3 miles from my house. I wish I had learned about this earlier in the day so I could have gone this evening. And since we have a concert to go to tomorrow night, it's either try to see it tomorrow morning at 10:25am or wait until Sunday. But either way, I'll get to see it sometime this weekend.

This just made my night!

Just saw Ford v. Ferrari, best review probably comes from my wife: "I don't like cars or racing but I ****ing loved that!"

Judging by the turnout in the theater, I don't have high hopes for the box office numbers, but I hope I'm wrong because it was really enjoyable. One thing that surprised me:

Spoiler:
How realistic they kept it. As compared to a movie like Remember the Titans, which plays loose with the facts in service of the story and moral, FvF actually told a pretty close facsimile of the build up and race.

Damon and Bale are predictably awesome as well, well worth your time.

There is a oft paraphrased expression that goes something like "The best sports movies aren't about the sport, they're about the people". FvF was that. Yeah, they talked about engines and aerodynamics occasionally, but really it's about Damon and Bale, their personal issues, their issues together, and their fight to get the project done.

That it happens to be about racing is just a good excuse for some really well shot scenes involving cars.

Monos - mesmerising, sometimes mad, film about teenage South American guerilla soldiers. The exact location and war they’re fighting are kept ambiguous. There’s a linear narrative regarding a hostage American woman, but more important is the fracturing of this horrible pseudo-military unit, amid flashes of craziness. It’s hard to describe this film in words, just see it.

Ford vs Ferrari

I liked this. It didn’t blow me away but it’s a fun ride even for someone like me who knows nothing about cars or racing.

Great acting all around.

I always enjoy watching Ugetsu, but its greatness eludes me. I like Sansho the Bailiff much better, but it goes to the same extremes.
