The Substance Not going to go much into the plot as I think it is best to go in blind. Demi Moore is fantastic but the entire cast was as well. There are a lot of up close shots that are slowed down but mixed with high energy music that meshes perfectly. The first two thirds was very interesting and I didn't really know where it was headed. I'll add a spoiler tag to talk about the timing of the acts but there is nothing plot related.

Spoiler:
It quickly ramps into a body horror film in the last act and they keep ramping it up. It goes from a 2 to 100 to 10000 fast. They use the subtleness of a sledgehammer to hammer home the themes of the movie. It's a Cronenberg type of film and I bet a lot of you will love it. I'm just not a body horror fan so the last 30 minutes ruined it for me.

I'm just going to say about this movie as I just saw it and I watch a lot of horror films but this movie nearly made me walk out that I was feeling that queasy. It definitely earns its R rating.

new 4k uhd remaster... it's lovely to see a very young Keith Carradine and Shelly Duvall under Robert Altman.

Cuckoo was an interesting, stylish horror movie that doesn't quite make sense...but that's ok, since the atmosphere and performances by Hunter Schaefer and Dan Stevens are excellent.

Strange Darling (2023-2024)) Terrific edge of your seat crime thriller set in rural Oregon. Fantastic acting and superb dialogue and superb score. Unexpected twists and turns. Thank you Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. You deserve Oscars. Must watch, imo, but, sorry, but it is violent. Will be streaming in October. Grade A.

The same friend who recommends most of the films I watch these days absolutely loved Cuckoo. I thought it was cool but couldn’t figure out what’s to love about it. He sees everything in the theater so I guess that helps but it didn’t do much for me.

Just a quick thought:

Joan Cusack is a national treasure and should be more famous. Maybe we can get her on a stamp, or something.

she's too much woman for you. For all of us, actually.

I could maybe get Joan Cusack, and I'd be fine with that.

In preparation for seeing The Substance, I decided to watch the director’s prior film, Revenge. Plot-wise, it’s fairly standard, pretty much exactly what I expected in that regard. I did not expect the rest…. If that’s what Coralie Fargeat does with unknowns and no budget… then I’m legit nervous about seeing The Substance.

I watched Substance(2024) last night. The point of the movie seemed to be to show off sensatonal body and makeup horror special effects. It was technically excellent in this regard. Freak shows do attract people. There was a good amount of soft core porn there too. It's is always nice to see attractive boobs and butts but it is not considered advanced filmmaking. I guess the director and writer wanted to touch on people's fear of cosmetic surgery going very wrong. There are stories in the social media of people over-doing surgeries so much that they become grotesque looking. The filmmakers went over the top with this paranoia. The main characters and the storyline didn't make a lot of sense and it was because the filmmaker's didn't really care about that part. In the beginning, Demi's character still looked quite attractive. Too bad she had zero friends or family ever around to tell her. The second half of the film was repulsive to watch and I never want to watch that again, and would I not recommend it to any friend as entertainment. I'm canceling all my Botox and serum injection appointments too! Being "memorable" is not a desirable feature with this film. So grade B for me. Happy film watching!

I have no interest in seeing The Substance, but I see this gross crap daily. At the bottom of my Instagram is a lot of recommendations for influences and for whatever reason many of them are Russian females. Many of these young Russian chicks look like total crap because of lip filler and you can tell that they would have looked naturally beautiful before all the cosmetic procedures.
