More opportunity to stop at a pub for a pint in the city. Much less so in the dismal countryside. So on average, at least Three pints per kilometer in the city and only One pint per ten kilometers in the barren countryside. You do the math.

Also Samuel Johnson and James Boswell may have already done extensive experiments on walking about in the city Vs. the countryside. I think they came up with some useful information.

At the grand canyon, I "hiked" (walked down the stairs) for about 400ft. There was 0.01 miles, and felt worse than I would if I had walked 2 miles. That's 0.01/2 for me.

Last year, there were those fires. I walked less than 2 miles, and felt like I may not make it home. That should count as an in-between nature and city, so...?

So I am going on holiday up north soon, and plan on walking Hadrian's Wall between Walltown Crags and Housesteads Fort. It's a little over eight miles, which I'm sure is doable in one go, and wouldn't think twice about in the city, but I don't want to be stupid or masochistic about it.

If the average person walks 3mph, maybe chop this down to 2mph if you never stop and check out some views, but probably closer to 1mph. That'll be a 6 to 8 hour hike.

I certainly wouldn't be ashamed of myself for camping the night. Looks like a beautiful hike though. Is this a popular hike to do?

looks like a decent bit of up/down.

I too have suffered from foot problems playing sport, everybody kicks my ass.

even when i was out of shape. a ten mile total hike in the mountains was very doable and enjoyable. with a couple thousand feet uphill and downhill can be tougher on trails than the uphill.

trail i do most years as a starting hike to get in shape.

I did Housesteads to Sewingshields and back two years ago, and it was a beautiful and profound experience. I presume it's popular, but I don't recall seeing more than about four other people on that three-mile walk. (Two of which were young women with rock music blaring out, for which they apologized; they said it helped them keep going.) That was on a weekday in July. Yes, it looks like two visits.

It's funny, when I was a student I lived in the Benwell area of Newcastle for two years. Pretty rough area, I never felt at ease there. There is a little bit of the Wall left there, and I never once bothered to visit it.

looks to be a fun hike charlie

Yeah, there's other walls around, dividing up land, but the Wall is different and unmistakable. The Romans didn't **** around.

Looking forward to it. It's even got me listening to Echo and the Bunnymen again.

From the great Philomena Cunk, interviewing an historian.

“Where did the Romans come from?”

“Well … Rome”

“How far did they get?”

“Well they got to the border with Scotland, but they didn’t bother going any further.”

“Yeah, I’ve felt the same myself.

2020 was to be my year to do the Death March. I was going to do the loaded version, so for practice on New Year's Day I did 27 miles with 20 lbs. plus pack and water. Then a couple of weeks later I did 20 miles with 35 lbs. plus pack and water. Beer I bought on the way. I could tell that I was ready.

Then the plague struck and that was the end of that.

I tried to keep in shape by walking 6 miles a day and twice that on weekends--half the time with a 20+ lb. pack because my problems usually begin when I'm not used to carrying a load. And to make matters worse, I gained about 15-20 lbs. due to the near-mystical properties of my Ice Cream Diet™ which I deployed to fight off the virus.

So if I want to do any foot traveling, I've to get my pack down to 15 lbs. (no problem), and get another 20 off my fat ass (problem), and then maybe my ****ing feet will stop hurting.

And I have to remember Phat Mack's First Law of Phat Macks: A Phat Mack in motion tends to remain in motion; a Phat Mack at rest tends to remain at rest.

It's $877. Good information is valuable.

i've done 20 mile walks in a day as recently as 2 years ago (early 50s at the time). of course weather and terrain are major variables in the experience. walking 6 miles a day and 12 on weekends for anyone under 65 seems like a reasonable starting point to then be able to launch into a marathon distance walk.

I try to walk 20 miles a week. I'm rarely successful.

I did measure distance walked golfing in a cart. 3 1/2 miles for 18 holes.

Happy 4th all.

I have no plans yet, but it's always better to find a rooftop than it is to go to some fireworks show.
07-05-2021 , 01:00 AM
crazy fireworks in my valley as usual on the 4th. 360 degrees around my house a couple million dollars in fireworks go up in smoke. i get to watch for free. from 9 till about 1 am the whole sky is lit up.
debartola (owner of the 49 ers) has a big one going every year. it lasts longer than many public ones and much better. at least 5 at a time rockets are in the air at all times.
07-05-2021 , 02:16 PM
Oh that would be cool
07-05-2021 , 06:05 PM
There was plenty last night. Pretty close to 360 degrees. There was so much smoke in the air that you couldn't see 5 miles after an hour. At the end, you couldn't see 1 mile.

No reason to go to a fireworks show in LA. It wasn't as crazy as last year, but there were still quite a few "less than legal" fireworks.

It made me realize that the aliens won't land their UFOs because, let's be honest, who wants to visit beings that party by blowing things up?

they dont land because they are liquid and would just sink into the dirt.

This is one of my most popular fortune cookie fortunes.

I don’t open fortune cookies , they always seem like the least delicious part of Chinese food. In my mind I kind of think of places that don’t give me a fortune cookie as more high end. I don’t need a cookie to tell me my fortune that’s my moms job.
