No, I'm a scientist and rationalist - which is worse. And yes, I'm an ass sometimes. Been one most of my life. It does annoy a great deal of people. But it shouldn't. But I'm used to it. And I don't let it bother me. Lao Tzu knows why.

the new york times posted an interesting graphical representation of the heat that occurred in portland a few days ago. similar graphs can be also be found for seattle and vancouver bc. over 15,300 data points and three consecutive days are clustered at the top

my analytical mind is disappointed the temps for each year aren't represented in different colors to see the trend towards warmer and warmer temps.

as for the nay-saying ****ers in and about the texas region:

Portland, Oregon, soared to a searing 116 degrees Monday, hotter than it has ever been in cities such as Dallas, New Orleans and downtown Los Angeles. In fact, when it comes to major U.S. cities, only Phoenix and Las Vegas have been hotter.

the worlds climate is changing, you can argue who or what is doing it but we have to face it and cant(wont) stop it.

Useful advice on celebrating the upcoming (pun intended, see article) July 4* weekend**.

* A grand celebration of the day in 1776 when the Colonies finally told the Limeys to go pound sand.

**It will be crazy this weekend, take care and be safe. Best to hide out at home I'm thinking; Drinking whiskey and BBQ a big steak.

why would anyone inland stay home when they could hit the coast and be cool.
unless they had air conditioning.

Well. I may have bought a new car.

Saw an Outback in a dealer's inventory I liked, but it was marked as "In Transit". Found out that sometimes means someone's ordered one and it's already spoken for, but not in this case.

Went up and took a drive in one that's outfitted the same (except better stereo), liked it, so put a deposit on the one that's supposedly on the way. Estimated to arrive the tenth.

Plan on trading in my old beater car, and keeping the Ranger for around-town/projects/hauling/snow days, etc.

Tentatively going to try a road trip to Seattle late this month. Decided to abort the attempt in June due to truck issue in Utah.

I hate the beach cities, to be honest. There is something about Santa Monica that feels so unwelcoming, and yet Malibu feels even worse to me.

I wish I were younger or that my feet were in better shape -- it would be fun to go for a long walk.

build up to it slowly. your body will respond.

foot problems are a *****. spouse has them and she finally found some orthopedic inserts that let her walk reasonable distances without severe pain. she's nowhere close to overweight...it can happen to anybody.

I'm averaging around 12 miles per day. Last year was at 11.5 per day for the year. It's time consuming but I am too lazy (old, out of shape etc.) to do more strenuous stuff. But now that covid is over (?) for me anyway I may start going back to the health club again and lift weights and sweat and such. For the last month or two I have been telling myself "Next Week for SURE!"

Beer, pizza and baseball are on the menu for tonight. It will take a while to walk that off!

Walking is a great, low-impact exercise for us olds.

I'm very fortunate that my neighborhood is highly walkable. I'd guess I get ~6 miles/day going to the stores, or just going for a walk.

X miles walking in the city = Y miles walking in the country. I'd like a ratio on that one, please.

All I know is that hiking in those national parks out west a couple of weeks ago was much different than this flat ass midwest pavement I am accustomed to. I do lots of stairs every day though but mountains are still more challenging

x/y = 4/3 because simplified fractions with 7 for denominator are cool repeating decimals

one leg two inches longer than the other? can you say you ran circles around everyone else?
