It can be individual shots. I mean you are talking about single frames? That's fine but I'm choosing scenes. That way you get motion and sound to go with it. Nothing longer than a scene though. (Some of his scenes were extremely long, of course).

I understand... thanks.

Shots, btw, are single camera sequences with zero cuts... so they could conceivably be an one second long or an entire movie(rope or the more recent opening sequence in gravity)

OK. Cuts are definitely allowed. As long as the "scene" is rather obvious or defined.

You're thinking of like the nearly 3 minute shot in Casino when they enter the Copa or whatever it was called...

This draft is more forgiving. We're drafting scenes. Sometimes a whole scene may be one shot, but we can do extra shots as long as it's clearly the same scene.

I'm about to RNG our names. If anyone wants to join before the first round is over they can.

I guess I'll tag along and pick 6th if that's cool.

Though I will say right now, while Kubrick is my favorite director by a mile, I still haven't seen a number of his films, as I kind of treat them like a fine wine and only watch them when I feel I'm in the proper headspace/setting. That said, while my selections will be somewhat limited, I definitely won't slack on the write-ups.

I'm looking at a bunch right now. There are a lot. It's not easy though.

I have no idea what I will pick at #2 yet. So many insane scenes.

Not sure where BrokeDonk is but I think I can go ahead and pick. If he wants the scene I'll pick something else.

With the 2nd overall pick I'll take 2001's The Dawn of Man scene.

The scene is quite long but definitely singularly thematic. It starts out showing some apes thousands of years ago just kind of mulling about. Later you see 2 ape factions jockeying for ownership of a water source. A bit later some apes awaken to see this giant black obelisk that will be a theme throughout the time-space of this film. Later on an ape stumbles upon some bones and begins playing with them and smashing them. He has discovered the tool to the score of Thus Spake Zarathustra (sp?), or the weapon as he'll know it. He uses this to beat the **** out of some dumb primitive apes and procure the watering hole and probably all the women. The scene ends in celebratory fashion as he hurls the weapon bone up into the air, which cuts beautifully into a modern cut of a space craft. Sprinkled throughout are some beautufil landscape frames.

Mrbaseball on the clock!

Round One
Dr. Strangelove - War Room Scene

I probably shouldn't be in this draft since I greatly dislike most of Kubricks work. Dr. Strangelove is a great exception though and one of my all-time favorite movies. He has one other great one, a very good and 2 okays. The rest I would have to be paid to be subjected to again. Nobody needs to worry about me sniping any 2001 scenes

This scene is classic. George C. Scott totally owns it in this movie and steals every scene he is in. His facial expressions along with his line delivery are beyond perfect.

"10, 20 million killed ... TOPS!

yeap... kubrick actually fooled Scott into thinking he was filming the warm up scenes and that they would play the scene seriously at a later time. of course the final cut had scott in all his hilarity.

Yep, IIRC Scott was pretty pissed about it.

Scott seems at times to be doing a cross between R Nixon and WF Buckley.

dr strangelove is my all-time fav movie (used to watch it after every LSD trip in college) and i could prolly pick entirely from that movie.
mr. baseball nailed it with that scene (fav line in that scene is when scott is like "well i think gen ripper invalidated that policy")

however since i have a feeling my fav scene from that movie will slip to later rounds and this is one of the most iconic scenes from kubrick's pantheon figured i'd pick it in the 1st round.

its classic on so many levels, primarily for its hilarity and the fact that the vast majority of the dialogue was improvised by emery, who was an actual marine.

there are so many amazing lines in this and the camera work is also pretty great even in its simplicity.

while this isn't my fav kubrick film its one of my fav scenes and i never fail to LOL while watching it.

Yep, that was on my short-short list of 4 that I picked from for the #2 pick.

Such a ridiculous amazing scene. Just watched it earlier today again. Never even noticed the "Tiffany cufflinks" line at the end. lol

There is a story that Kubrick hired an actor to play the part and Ermey was a consultant. Legend has it that Ermey was not impressed with the actor's portrayal but couldn't convince Kubrick to let him do it. He then made a video of himself being pelted with tennis balls in the pouring rain while rattling off like several straight minutes' worth of insults and Kubrick replaced the original actor with Ermey.

"Did your parents have any children that lived?!" makes me laugh, as I have no idea what it means.

"Are you about to call me an *******?!"

ya it's incredible. tho my fav line of his from the movie (and I think I'm ok posting it as it's just a throw away line in a scene no one is going to draft) is when he's yelling at private Pyle: "don't worry about getting up to the top if god wanted you to make it he'd have miracled your ass up here".
I just love using "miracled" as a verb, so hilarious.

edit: am I supposed to PM somebody?
