IMHO those are his masterpieces.
I watch Dr. Strangelove at least every year or two as it is one of my favorites ever but have never seen Barry Lyndon. Right now I am just grabbing what I can off of On Demand for freshness in the draft and Barry Lyndon isn't there

Stanley Kubrick Films Scene Draft

ok for this draft i've decided i'm just going with my personal favs even tho they're more obscure and i know i could snipe some more "popular" scenes and still get my top picks later in the draft.
but i feel like this should be a more personal reflection of my love of kubrick rather then just trying to snatch his "most famous" scenes.

so here perhaps is one of the most beautifully shot scenes from undoubtedly his most beautifully shot work.
the whole movie was shot using natural candlelight, and not only is the story epic in scope but the musical score is masterful imo.
i also absolutely love how unreliable the narrator is.

this scene is a huge turning point in the movie.
i don't want to give spoilers away for those that haven't seen it but trust me when i tell you it changes the entire course of the protagonist's arc.
to someone who hasn't seen the film it may just seem like a boring scene where two people are staring at each other wistfully, and to a non-kubrick lover or someone unfamiliar with this work thats prolly what it seems like. i can't convince you otherwise, but to those that have seen it, they should recognize the brilliance, beauty and import of the scene.

and the best part is there is almost zero dialogue.
(oh a lil context btw they're totally cheating everyone in the game).

enjoy (dunno why they put in the opening credit type things they don't belong with the scene and were inserted by whoever uploaded the video. but it was only one i could find):

ps: i don't do psychedelics anymore, but if any of you are fond of mushrooms this is a particularly great film to view after the peak.

DAMN. Great pick. That is definitely my top 2 from that film.

I also love that she's degening it up there. Once they get outside in the moonlight and the kiss happens and the music changes is badass.

Round 2

Spartacus - I'm Spartacus

I love this movie and it has several draftable scenes. This one is probably the most iconic. The battle has been lost but not the cause.

so far:
War Room - Dr. Strangelove
I'm Spartacus - Spartcus

I thought that would be the first scene taken from Spartacus. Iconic scene.

I'll have my pick up soon.

OK, There is actually another scene from this movie I want to draft but I'm not sure if it would count as one scene, and there isn't great YT footage of it, anyway so I'll just skip it for now. If it gets drafted later I'll mention that this was where I truly wanted to take it.

With that said, I am perfectly happy to get this scene from the same film. Iconic scene and really is the turning point in the film. They juxtapose horrible images with Beethoven's 9th which is Alex's favorite song. This causes him severe discomfort and he begins to see the awfulness of the images. I don't know if this is called aversion therapy or what but it works, and the scene is fantastic.

Malcolm McDowell said he did not want to do this but the eye doctor assured him no pain. He said that was false and that it did hurt. They had 10 minutes to shoot this scene which is remarkable, and the guy putting drops in his eyes was actually an eye doctor who needed to do that every 15 seconds so his corneas would not dry up and cause blindness. Because these were typically used on patients lying down, the eye openers slid down and scratched McDowell's eyeball. It's crazy how difficult his role was in this film and he didn't get any award for his acting.

When I picked spartacus, I was looking for the scene inside the box as he waited to fight the ethiopean warrior... I have never seen kirk so intense and that is why I chose to go with a single frame of his defiant face as an expression for his defiance against Kubrick himself as my first pick.

I know that probably is not others ideal of a kubrick scene... it is however my ideal of one of Kubricks many brilliant talents. You need to look beyond the print of the film to see the meaning of it's brilliance.

Barry Lyndon. German lady/baby. I love this scene - it's so beautiful. Beautiful lady, too. And it looks so natural her feeding this baby alone in her house. The candle light is wonderfully soft. The scene itself is not overly important, but it does show the drifter Redmond Barry's ability to woo and weasel his way into peoples' lives - while giving a false name of course. This is just a German lady he stumbles upon and of course beds her while her hubby is away in the war. What a MILF.

Round 3
Dr. Strangelove - Calling the President

Back to the well on Strangelove. Just about every scene in this whole movie is draftable. This one is a longish setup for one of the best punchlines in movie history. Sellers and Wynn are both perfect here.

so far:
War Room - Dr. Strangelove
I'm Spartacus - Spartacus
Phone Call - Dr. Strangelove

ok this scene is very brief but its one of my fav scenes in my absolute fav movie ever.

the context here is what makes this scene so epic.
at this point in the film they have figured out the recall code (hence sellers desperately trying to call the president collect) and have recalled almost all of the bombers.
however they were unable to reach the final bomber and so the president has given the soviets its target and heading and is asking general turgidson if the bomber is going to be able to elude the soviet anti air defenses and reach its target.

obv the fate of the world depends on the soviets being able to shoot down this bomber, and the hilarity of this scene is turgidson getting so worked up with his patriotic fervor only to come to the horrible implications of what he's just said.
absolute comedy gold.

i PM'd mrbaseball. if thats not correct i apologize.

Steady cam was still fairly new, only a few years old and it really technologically enhanced Kubricks vision by channeling a spirituality and imposing doom.
Great pick, and yes, the steadicam used in this film was revolutionary. But I have to nit-pick and say that it was not used for this sequence. It's a standard helicopter shot.

Full Metal Jacket - Pyle in head

Epic scene of bootcamp graduation. Pyle finally become a full fledged Marine but the cost of getting here was just too great for him. D'Onofrio just looks so crazy evil its amazing.

mrbaseball,

the pyle murder suicide scene is epic.
and ya i had a hard time finding that scene from strangelove, it was my #1 overall pick coming into the draft but figured since it was so short it wouldn't go in the 1st round.

I view it as three small scenes:

1. Everything up to and including the monolith's first appearance
2. Man-ape's revelation of the bone as tool/weapon
3. Taking back the watering hole

Again, in a draft like this it isn't something I actually take issue with. Just my take on it.

It does make me wonder (and I had been wondering this prior to picking it) if I only get the Stargate sequence as it is in the youtube you posted, or if I get everything after it until the end of the movie as well?

Being honest, I was picking it under the assumption I would not get the scene after it.

I think Mrbaseball drafted out of order for Round 4.

I think Schu is on the clock for his 3rd round pick, and then dcm drafts 3 and 4 and we come back this way.

It's night time though, so we'll resume tomorrow unless those guys pick tonight. If either of them wants Pyle suicide they can draft it. It's a great scene and I didn't think it would last much longer.

Can someone else weigh in on my Dawn of Man pick? For someone who doesn't want to take a lot of exception to me selecting it, dcm certainly has.

I don't see how it's not all 1 long scene. But if it's ineligible then I may re-pick something else.

Tangentially, dcm, why would you think you get the entire rest of the film 2001 because you drafted the stargate scene? That's obviously not going to happen but please tell us why you think so.

The suicide scene is so intense. Especially when D'Onofrio is yelling "this is my rifle!" It must be an emotional drain working for Kubrick as an actor, but then if you make it though you've got an incredible performance in a gem of a film.

There's that moment where Joker informs him that the gun is loaded and Hartman pauses and gets that "oh ****" feeling. For the first time in the film he's gone from drill instructor to just a man. He's concerned for his life. He no longer has control of the situation. At the end he slips back into drill instructor mode and starts yelling insults (I love "what is your major malfunction!?") then gets blasted.

I remember seeing this scene on HBO in the late-'80s as a 9 or 10 year old kid and being taken aback by how real and brutal it looked. I don't remember watching the film but anytime I heard Full Metal Jacket I always thought of it as the movie where that guy kills himself. Not until years later would I watch the film in its entirety. But I still remember first seeing it as a kid. Pretty cool that here we are like 24 years later and it's still relevant.

I just meant everything post the Stargate sequence.

I definitely think your pick should stand. But it's certainly a gray area in terms of what qualifies as a scene, and I think it merits discussion, not only as it relates to this draft.

My question, as it relates to my pick, was: Do you view "Jupiter, and beyond the infinite" as one scene, or multiple?

i think nitting it up over what constitutes one long scene vs multiple scenes is not in the spirit of this draft.
i say unless someone specifically wants the scene directly in question it shouldn't really be a concern.
the point is just to highlight a bunch of amazing scenes from incredible movies.
kubrick really was the man.
